DC’s Scrapped Lobo Movie Would Have Made “Deadpool Look Like a Disney Family Film” (Can the DCU Still Make It?)

I’ve been following Lobo since he first showed up in the Omega Men way back in ’83, and honestly, he’s been one of my go-to comic characters ever since. He’s popped up in cartoons and animated movies over the years, but it took ages for him to get a live-action appearance. It finally happened on the show Krypton, but a proper big-screen Lobo with the rest of the DC crew? That’s been the holy grail for fans like me. There have been so many attempts to get a Lobo movie made – different versions, different scripts – but sadly, none of them have ever quite panned out.

The release of the Supergirl movie trailer last week was a significant moment for Lobo fans, giving them their first glimpse of Jason Momoa in the role. Momoa, already known for playing Aquaman, had long been considered perfect for Lobo, even before being officially cast. A recent interview has revealed details about even more plans for the character, including a potentially fantastic superhero movie that ultimately wasn’t made.

Scrapped DCU Lobo Movie Was Guardians of the Galaxy by Quentin Tarantino

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, screenwriter Jason Fuchs discussed various projects he’s worked on in Hollywood, including a Lobo movie he wrote for DC and Warner Bros. While fans are excited to see Lobo appear in the upcoming Supergirl film, details about the canceled movie might be disappointing, as they reveal what could have been.

I think my favorite unproduced script is the one for Lobo,” Fuchs said. “It would have been like Guardians of the Galaxy, but directed by Quentin Tarantino – a really dark, violent, and over-the-top movie. It was so intense, it would have made Deadpool seem like a family film, which is likely why it never happened. Still, it was a really fun project that I wish we’d been able to finish.

When asked who he pictured playing the part while writing, Fuchs simply replied, “Momoa.”

He wondered if anyone else could have pulled off the role, saying, “It had to be Momoa.” While they never actually spoke to him about it, the director always envisioned Jason Momoa in the part. Michael Bay was also potentially going to direct, which would have been incredible. It was a strange period for DC films, and the project didn’t quite align with their current plans, but the script was a lot of fun to write, and it featured a Green Lantern along with other interesting DC characters.

Fuchs thinks Lobo will eventually get the recognition he deserves, and his script might even be used someday because the character is so compelling. However, Fuchs admitted his script included a joke at the beginning that made fun of a famous scene from the movie Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, specifically the “Martha” moment, and he suspects that part might need to be revised if the script is ever produced.

Okay, so there’s this scene with Lobo, and this villain is begging for his life, trying to appeal to Lobo’s sympathy by talking about his mother. He’s all, ‘Please, what will happen to my mother? What will become of Martha?’ Lobo’s confused and asks him to repeat it, and the guy says, ‘Martha! It’s my mom’s name!’ thinking maybe they have something in common. He’s getting his hopes up! But then, completely out of nowhere, Lobo just kills him, and then he’s totally bewildered, like, ‘Wait… what was that even about?’ It’s a really jarring, darkly funny moment.

A standalone Lobo movie is likely a ways off, but fans of the character will still get to see Jason Momoa play him next summer in the Supergirl movie, which comes out on June 26, 2026.
