Currently, Superman is a thriving enterprise, as James Gunn’s film version of Superman is igniting fan interest in the comics. DC seems to have a strategic approach for this surge – producing top-notch Superman comic books. One standout aspect of Superman was its tone; it managed to evoke the optimistic essence of classic Superman comics while offering delightful humor. Given that superhero comics can often be intense, the movie effectively balances this intensity with lighter moments for occasional relief.
However, some current Superman comics – notably “Superman,” which is deeply engrossed in the “Legion of Darkseid” storyline – are quite dark. To cater to fans who prefer a more familiar feel, DC has introduced lighter-toned books that align with the movie’s atmosphere, such as “Kal-El-Fornia Love” #1.
Kal-El-Fornia Love” #1 is an outstanding anthology title, a skill DC has showcased in recent years, featuring various members from the Superman family. The third story, titled “Before Sunrise,” resonates with ’90s indie cinema fans, and stars Earth-Two’s Supergirl, also known as Power Girl, and Ice. Ice was once a part of the iconic Justice League International, where Power Girl also served, and their adventure in L.A. involves saving lives, superhero activities, and personal conversations. These discussions delve into their relationships, reminding Ice of her most significant bond – with Guy Gardner, a character well-known among Superman enthusiasts.
Ice and Guy Gardner Fit Together When No One Thought They Would
In the Superman series, Guy Gardner is portrayed by Nathan Fillion, who flawlessly embodies the character’s essence – a boisterous, self-assured hero with a penchant for speaking and acting as he pleases. Although Guy Gardner may come off as dislikable in the comics, part of his allure lies in his abrasive demeanor towards others. Beneath his tough exterior, Guy is actually a dedicated hero who deeply cares about the world and its inhabitants. Known as the rebel of the Justice League International, Guy was the polar opposite of Ice. Ice, a Nordic princess with ice powers, was the epitome of kindness and sweetness. Her compassion played a significant role in the humor of Justice League International, and her purity stood in stark contrast to Guy’s rough edges. Despite Guy’s advances towards many women, including Ice, due to his self-proclaimed charm, their relationship was an unexpected success and became one of the Justice League’s most iconic pairings for a time. This development was surprising, as the sweetest member and the most rebellious on the team somehow found harmony.
In an unusual twist of fate, I found myself drawn to the enigmatic figure known as Ice, much like a moth to a flame. This intriguing duo, we were, the epitome of opposites attracting. Our bond was one where we each learned valuable lessons from the other. I, Guy Gardner, remained my brash and boisterous self, yet I discovered tender moments within me that even I didn’t know existed. Ice, on the other hand, learned to assert herself when necessary, a trait she had previously shied away from. Our journey was not without its turbulence, but we managed to navigate through it relatively smoothly, until the tragic day when Ice took her final breath. The void left by her death was profound, for she had become an integral part of my life’s tapestry. She provided a sanctuary where I could be myself, beneath the layers of armor that I wore as protection against the world.
In the years following her demise, I faced numerous trials and tribulations – the disbandment of the Green Lantern Corps, the acquisition of a yellow ring, and uncovering my part-alien heritage (although this aspect is less frequently discussed these days, leaving me uncertain about its current status). Ice’s absence was palpable and weighed heavily on my heart. There were moments when I was able to cross into the afterlife to see her once more, and in those encounters, the walls I built around myself would crumble.
Miraculously, Ice was reborn during that time, and so too did our relationship resurface, though it never lasted for long. Despite this, it is evident that a deep love has always existed between us; if there was anyone I loved, it was her. And Ice, in return, cherished me, as she confides in Power Girl.
Ice Reaches Out to Guy Gardner Because She Misses Him
Love plays a significant role in our lives, just as it does in the realm of comics. Superhero narratives often revolve around action, but the emotional resonance of love is something universal that everyone can relate to. These heroes regularly put their lives on the line, and more often than not, they do so for love – whether it’s their devotion to their home cities or a broader sense of humanity. Love may sometimes be a vulnerability, yet it also offers power. Love has the ability to elevate everything, and that’s a lesson Ice and Guy learned from each other. There was something lacking in both their lives without the presence of the other, which is why the ending of “Before Sunrise” is so heartwarming. Ice reaches out to this man who held her heart, whom she cherished, leaving us uncertain about what lies ahead. However, that’s the beauty of life.
In some instances, collection books such as “Kal-El-Fornia Love #1″ might not be considered part of the main storyline. Nevertheless, one can only wish that Ice and Guy manage to reunite someday. Their bond was initially thought to be improbable, yet it significantly impacted their lives. It’s uncertain whether they will rekindle their relationship, but this touching moment shared between them is truly heartwarming.
