Superhero films have dominated entertainment for years, and it’s been an exciting time for fans. Both Marvel and DC have released many popular and fun movies, and they’re planning even more, with 2026 looking like a particularly big year. DC’s Supergirl is scheduled for release in June, and Marvel will follow with Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July and the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday in December. However, alongside the great superhero movies, there have also been some disappointments – and one of the worst is now available on a streaming service.
Halle Berry’s 2004 film Catwoman became available to stream on HBO Max on January 1st. The movie follows Patience Phillips, who gains cat-like abilities and becomes the heroine Catwoman after being revived by an Egyptian mau cat following a conspiracy at her workplace. The cast also includes Sharon Stone, Benjamin Bratt, Frances Conroy, and Alex Borstein, but the film was not well-received by audiences or critics.
Catwoman Is Considered One of the Worst Movies Ever Made (But It’s Become a Cult Favorite)

Most superhero movies are huge successes, but Catwoman was a major flop. It didn’t earn much money at the box office – only $82.4 million despite costing $100 million to make – and critics hated it. Rotten Tomatoes gives it an incredibly low 8% critics score, and Roger Ebert famously included it on his list of worst films ever. While audiences weren’t quite as harsh, the movie was generally considered poor quality, and Halle Berry even received a Golden Raspberry Award for her performance.
Although the movie isn’t widely considered a classic, opinions have improved over time. It’s now recognized as being innovative for its era, featuring a Black actress in the lead role of a superhero film. It’s also gained a dedicated fan base as new viewers enjoy its over-the-top style and its independence from major superhero universes – Halle Berry’s Catwoman isn’t tied to the Batman story, which is unusual for the character. With the film now available on HBO Max, even more people will get a chance to see it. Perhaps it’s not so infamous after all.
