James Gunn has explained that it’s unlikely we’ll see numerous comic tie-ins or novels delving deeper into the expanding lore of the DC Universe, as he manages it.
What did James Gunn say about DCU’s canon?
In a recent discussion on Threads, someone asked if Gunn would be okay with DC Comics creating comics about Clark Kent’s origin within the DC Universe. Gunn clarified that due to the complexity of maintaining consistency across various films and television series, the team at DC Studios views anything beyond filmed media as non-canon.
After being asked, Gunn clarified that the novel “Welcome to Metropolis,” which was based on the 2025 movie and acts as a prequel for younger readers, is not considered part of the official storyline of the DC Universe according to him.
Regarding the future of the DCU, Gunn has already started planning ahead. Last week, he announced that the upcoming Superman film, titled “Man of Tomorrow,” is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Directed by Gunn, this movie will be based on DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. In the film, we can expect the return of David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Currently, it’s undecided which actors from the initial film will rejoin for the sequel. After the project was revealed, speculation arose online about its possible cast and storyline. Recent whispers hint at Jason Momoa potentially playing Lobo, as well as Milly Alcock possibly returning as Supergirl.
The film features Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Anthony Carrigan as Metarmorpho, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and others. Since its debut, the movie has garnered a Certified Fresh rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. During its time in theaters, it generated over $600 million globally at the box office.
