DCU’s Clayface Movie Takes a Big Step Forward With Female Lead Casting

The development on the DC Universe’s Clayface movie is moving forward, with reports indicating that Naomi Ackie is a strong contender to join the cast as the female lead opposite Thomas Rhys Harries, who is set to portray Matt Hagen’s version of the main character. Although specific details about Ackie’s role are not yet revealed, Deadline suggests she is the top choice for the part. It appears that discussions regarding her involvement in Clayface are ongoing, as nothing has been finalized at this stage.

As a movie buff, I’m excitedly anticipating that Ackie might soon join the cast of the upcoming film, Clayface. Reports in industry circles usually indicate that such news means a deal is about to be sealed. If everything goes as planned and no unexpected events occur, Ackie will officially become part of the project, marking him as the next actor confirmed for Clayface before production kicks off later this year.

Under the guidance of director James Watkins and the creative penmanship of Mike Flanagan, “Clayface” is set to be the third major release within the DC Universe. Slated for premiere in September 2026, this highly-anticipated film follows closely behind the summer debut of “Supergirl.” As a testament to the diversity of DC Studios’ creative capabilities, co-head James Gunn has repeatedly emphasized that “Clayface” represents an R-rated horror film focusing on body horror.

Rhys Harries secured the role of Clayface in mid-June, edging out contenders such as George MacKay, Tom Blyth, Leo Woodall, and Jack O’Connell. Upon making the announcement, Gunn expressed that he and producer Matt Reeves were greatly impressed by the actor during the audition phase. Previously, Ackie has appeared in films like “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, “Mickey 17”, and “Blink Twice”.

In the intriguing enigma surrounding Ackie’s Clayface character, there is a plausible speculation that she may embody a character reminiscent of Dr. Stella Bates, a name that might ring a bell for fans of Batman: The Animated Series. On the episode “Mudslide,” Stella was Matt Hagen’s love interest, whom he met on the set of the film The Dark Interlude, where Stella served as a medical consultant. Later, after Matt transformed into Clayface, Stella endeavored to create a cure to stabilize his deteriorating form. Even if Ackie isn’t portraying Stella Bates, she could be playing a character with similar characteristics. Flanagan hinted that he drew inspiration from Batman: The Animated Series while penning the Clayface script, suggesting it’s likely he might have incorporated elements from “Mudslide.

It’s clear that the Clayface movie won’t be a straightforward remake of storylines from Batman: The Animated Series. Instead, it might offer a unique take on Dr. Stella Bates if that’s where Watkins and the team are heading. Many comic book adaptations have introduced original characters with no ties to the source material, like Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight trilogy, so it’s possible Ackie is playing an entirely new character. Unfortunately, fans won’t get Clayface updates at San Diego Comic-Con this year, but as production is about to start, we can hope that her role will be revealed soon.
