Fans eagerly anticipate Robert Pattinson’s role in “The Batman Part II,” and they’re curious about who will take on the role of Batman in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe franchise. However, according to recent comments from Gunn, a casting decision for this iconic character isn’t expected anytime soon. On the platform Threads, a fan asked Gunn about rumors suggesting that DC Studios is already auditioning actors for the DCU’s Batman. As always, Gunn clarified any speculation surrounding future projects, providing a concise and straightforward response to the query.
Gunn clarified that there are no plans at present for DC Studios to cast a new actor for the role of the big-screen Batman.
Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga series is progressing independently, while DC Studios simultaneously works on a different Batman project for the DC Universe, titled “The Brave and the Bold“. This story will focus on an older Batman and his relationship with his son Damian Wayne. The release date has yet to be announced, but Gunn mentioned that he prefers not to launch “The Brave and the Bold” in the same year as “The Batman Part II“. At present, the script for “The Brave and the Bold” is being drafted.
Fans will keep on suggesting their preferred actors for the role of Batman in the DC Universe until an official casting decision is made by DC Studios. One frequently mentioned name is Alan Ritchson, who plays Reacher and has shown interest in playing this character. However, when asked about the prospect of Ritchson joining the DCU, Gunn expressed his admiration for the actor and suggested we should simply wait and observe what unfolds.
Ever since he took on the role as co-head of DC Studios in 2022, Gunn has made it clear that no project will commence filming until a script is finalized first. Given this approach, it’s understandable why casting for “The Brave and the Bold” hasn’t begun just yet. In line with the new DCU’s “Wonder Woman” movie, Gunn seems to be adopting a strategy of waiting until the screenplay is polished before considering actors. By having the script complete, he can better visualize how the character is portrayed, which will likely guide his choices in selecting performers. Instead of fitting an actor to the role of Batman in “The Brave and the Bold” based on preconceived notions, Gunn has the flexibility to shape the character according to what serves the story best. Once the script is compelling, he’ll choose an actor who can bring that vision to life effectively.
Despite the smooth progress of “The Brave and the Bold” script, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the starring role filled soon. Given the multiple setbacks, “The Batman Part II” isn’t slated to release until October 2027. Therefore, “The Brave and the Bold” might not debut before 2028 at the very least. Fortunately, DC Studios has a pipeline brimming with intriguing projects for fans – such as the films “Supergirl” and “Clayface”, and the TV series “Lanterns”. Additionally, Gunn is busy developing a secretive sequel to the “Superman” franchise.
