When Dungeons & Dragons announced Project Sigil in 2022, its purpose wasn’t immediately obvious. It launched in February as a mix of a virtual tabletop and 3D design tool, but even after testing, it was unclear how it would fit with the rest of D&D. Shortly after launch, Wizards of the Coast had layoffs that affected the Sigil team, leading many to believe the project wouldn’t last. Now, the shutdown of the 3D virtual tabletop has been officially announced.
On October 24th, D&D Beyond announced that Sigil, their virtual tabletop, will be closing down next year. In a detailed blog post, the team explained they couldn’t provide the ongoing support needed to maintain the 3D D&D sandbox. Sigil will officially close in October 2026, but users can expect some perks as a thank you for their support until then.
Project Sigil Is Officially Dead, But Players Are Getting Some Freebies In Return

It’s not a surprise that Sigil is closing down. While the graphics were impressive, it never quite found a clear purpose. With so many great virtual tabletops already available, Sigil didn’t offer players anything new. However, for those who’ve been using the official Dungeons & Dragons virtual tabletop, Wizards of the Coast has announced a plan for the platform leading up to its final shutdown in October 2026.
If you’ve ever used the Sigil virtual tabletop feature with a Master Tier subscription, you’ll receive 6 months of free Master Tier access. This is our way of saying thanks for trying it out! Eligible accounts should see the credit applied by November 7th. Even if your subscription isn’t currently active, you’ll still get 6 months of free D&D Beyond Master Tier access.
Okay, so here’s the deal with Sigil. It’ll stay running as it is until October 2026, which means everything I’ve built in my game will still be there. And as a thank you for pre-ordering the 2024 Core Rulebook, or just for being a player, Wizards is giving everyone who got those Sigil rewards – like my Gold Dragon digital mini – a free digital dice set on D&D Beyond! Plus, all of us D&D Beyond users will get a cool new character sheet backdrop. It’s a nice gesture for shutting Sigil down so soon after it launched, honestly.
D&D Fans Don’t Want a New Official VTT, They Want Support for Ones They Already Love
Honestly, when I saw the official announcement, I wasn’t shocked, and it doesn’t seem like most other D&D fans were either. Sigil was cool for some, but it never really caught on, you know? What everyone really wants is for Wizards to focus on what we’re asking for. I’m seeing a lot of people hoping for Baldur’s Gate 4, but mostly, we just want Wizards to work with a virtual tabletop (VTT) we already love instead of trying to build their own.
Moved to Foundry years ago an never looked back.
Just partner with them, please.— InternetOzzy (@InternetOzzy) October 24, 2025
Many players of Dungeons & Dragons have been happily using Foundry VTT for a long time, as InternetOzzy pointed out. Now, a lot of fans are hoping D&D will officially work with Foundry VTT instead of trying to create their own 3D virtual tabletop. The 2D map tool on D&D Beyond will likely stay available, but it’s uncertain if they’ll try another new project like that again.
So, Wizards of the Coast announced Sigil is shutting down, and they say the lessons they learned from it will help them build better digital tools in the future. Honestly, though, Sigil wasn’t really what most of us were asking for. There are already a ton of great virtual tabletop (VTT) options out there. What I, and a lot of other players, would really love to see is smoother ways to get official D&D content working with the VTTs we already use and love.
Some fans hope for a collaboration with platforms like Foundry, while others want Wizards of the Coast to focus on creating new content for the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons. As the plans for 2025 are finalized, we should learn more about the future of Dungeons & Dragons soon. However, the planned Sigil project has been cancelled.
