With the release of the Dragon Delves adventure anthology, Wizards of the Coast is now directing its attention towards their next big book, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer. This upcoming title has stirred excitement among fans due to its return to the beloved Eberron region. A recent update on D&D Beyond provides further insights into this upcoming release. Despite being shorter than many anticipated, the book is also more affordable compared to most official sourcebooks. However, it’s another aspect of the book that has caught the eye of many Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts – it could potentially mark the return of a feature we lost with the 2024 rules update.
In the upcoming Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, slated for release in 2024, there’s an updated version of the Artificer class, accompanied by five subclasses. Players have had a sneak peek at these revised versions due to Unearthed Arcana, and Artificer enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating their official launch. Although the new Artificer is the standout feature, there are other intriguing elements in the latest Eberron book that have caught people’s attention as well.

Together with the Artificer, the forthcoming sourcebook introduces refined versions of five distinct species, along with fresh backgrounds, feats, spells, and additional content. The rule changes implemented in 2024 have been generally positive for Dungeons & Dragons, yet they weren’t without certain trade-offs. One such adjustment was the elimination of popular options like the Half-Elf. It appears that this option might make a comeback with Forge of the Artificer, although it seems to be more of an updated or altered version rather than a direct return.
Eberron’s Revised Species List Includes The Region’s Half-Elves
Wizards of the Coast has not yet disclosed all the revamped species that will be available to players once again with the Forge of the Artificer expansion. However, there are some tantalizing tidbits we can share, and they’re certainly worth getting thrilled about! One such piece of news is that the Living Construct Warforged, a well-known Eberron species, will make its comeback with a 2024 update. This alone is an exciting development, but another intriguing aspect of Eberron lore has piqued players’ interest – the Khoravar!
The Khoravar can be seen as a unique race, not exactly half-elves in the traditional sense. Their lineage is more intricate than the average half-elf born from an elven and human union. Instead, they represent their own species, stemming from a human and elf ancestry but eventually developing into something distinct. However, they share many characteristics with half-elves, making them the closest approximation we have to this blend of races.

2024’s update on the Player’s Handbook eliminated the half-elf and other mixed-species characters like half-orcs. This action was a part of initiatives aimed at eliminating content potentially viewed as racist, which also encompassed changing “race” to “species” in terminology. However, many players expressed disappointment upon finding their beloved character creation choices were no longer available.
Introducing Eberron’s take on half-elves via the Khoravar could offer a suitable middle ground in this situation. Before we can judge how closely related it will be to the old pre-2024 half-elf, we need to see the final design of the Khoravar species. However, there’s much excitement among players about discovering its characteristics, and I’m one of them.
Mark my words, fellow enthusiasts! On August 19th, the much-anticipated Eberron: Forge of the Artificer will be unveiled. Prepare yourselves, for you can secure a copy ahead of time through D&D Beyond – a move that’ll ensure you’re among the first to wield its magical power!
