I’m so excited to hear about the movie adaptation of Dead by Daylight! As a big fan, I’ve spent countless hours playing this incredibly tense survival horror game. It’s a really unique concept – one player is a terrifying Killer, hunting four other players who are just trying to survive. The Killer has to sacrifice the Survivors to this creepy Entity, while the Survivors desperately try to repair generators and escape. Honestly, turning that into a movie seems like a huge challenge, but I’m hopeful because they’ve got some talented people working on it. I can’t wait to see how they bring the world of Dead by Daylight to life on the big screen!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse and Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind the popular game Dead by Daylight, are collaborating to make a movie adaptation. Alexandre Aja, known for horror films like The Hills Have Eyes, and David Leslie Johnston-McGoldrick, who has worked with James Wan on projects like Aquaman and Orphan, will be writing the screenplay. Although this is the first time Aja and Johnston-McGoldrick have teamed up, both bring significant experience to the project, with Aja being a leading figure in the horror genre.
Despite being a talented director, Alexandre Aja won’t be directing the Dead by Daylight movie. He’s already committed to directing the Netflix sequel, Under Paris 2. Blumhouse-Atomic Monster is now searching for a new director for the video game adaptation. Jason Blum praised Aja and David, stating they uniquely combine compelling characters with intense horror. He noted their work creates a genuinely frightening world rooted in both survival horror and psychological terror.
How Could Dead by Daylight Work as a Movie?

What makes Dead by Daylight so unique is the variety of Killers players can choose from – it’s not just one character! They can even play as iconic villains from other franchises, like the Xenomorph, characters from Resident Evil, and Vecna from Stranger Things. On the Survivor side, you’ll find familiar faces like Ash Williams from Evil Dead and Ellen Ripley from Alien. The upcoming movie, however, will likely focus on a single Killer and use generic Survivors, which might make it feel more like a standard slasher film compared to the game’s broader scope.
Even if it’s not a blockbuster for everyone, the movie should still be fun and capture the feel of the game. Reports suggest the filmmakers – Blumhouse and Atomic Monster – plan to stay true to the source material, focusing on pleasing existing fans rather than trying to appeal to a wider audience. Given the game’s huge player base – over 60 million worldwide – the movie could be very successful if fans enjoy it, just like we’ve seen with adaptations of Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy’s.
