Does the Dead Lover trailer stink?

Throughout cinema history, filmmakers have tried many tricks to immerse audiences – from 3D to even mildly shocking seats. Now, a trailer for ‘Dead Lover’ is bringing back an old idea: ‘Smell-O-Vision.’ This technology, originally called ‘Smell-O-Vision’ or ‘Odorama,’ was first used in the late 1960s and later revived by director John Waters in his 1981 film, ‘Polyester’.

What the Dead Lover trailer is about…

Dead Lover tells the story of a solitary gravedigger, accustomed to the smell of death, who finds love with a man who unfortunately drowns. Overcome with grief, she attempts to bring him back to life using bizarre and unconventional science, leading to unexpected outcomes and a surprising new romance.

How they did it…

I was so fascinated to learn about how Grace Glowicki’s film came together! She not only directed and co-wrote it, but stars alongside her friends Ben Petrie, Leah Doz, and Lowen Morrow – and they all played multiple roles! It started as just a group of friends brainstorming ideas and then acting them out with people they knew from local theater. They actually rehearsed the script for six weeks before figuring out who would play which character – Grace was the only one with a set role from the beginning! The whole thing was shot beautifully on 16mm film over 16 days at AstroLabs Studios in Toronto, and amazingly, it all cost less than $350,000. They kept things simple with just two black box stages, completely transforming them for each scene. Grace really wanted to capture the feeling of a raw, low-budget experimental play, and I think she succeeded. I’m really curious to see what the critics will think – will it be a hit, or will someone declare it terrible? Only time will tell!

The film Dead Lover will premiere in select cinemas across the UK and Ireland on Friday, March 20th, 2026. A unique feature of all showings will be ‘Stink-O-Vision,’ where audiences will receive scratch-and-sniff cards to enhance the experience.
