Dead Manga Will Release New Story to Celebrate Anime Return

It’s common for anime series to be based on manga, and while many adaptations exist, it often takes a while for the anime to catch up to the manga’s storyline. For instance, popular series like Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man still have several years of content left to adapt. This year, Studio MAPPA is revisiting a previously animated universe – not Hell’s Paradise or Jujutsu Kaisen – and the original manga is also planning something exciting. Anime fans should get ready, as the series featuring the lizard-headed main character will be returning to both anime and manga in 2026.

Often called one of the most unusual manga ever made, Dorohedoro tells the story of a world filled with magic and features a main character with a lizard’s head. The first anime adaptation concluded in 2020 after twelve episodes. Now, in exciting news for fans, Studio MAPPA is bringing the story back for a second season! Even better, the original creator, Q Hayashida, is involved, writing a brand new one-shot chapter to celebrate. This new chapter will be published in Shogakukan in Japan on April 11th.

Dorohedoro’s Surprising Return

The manga Dorohedoro finished in 2018, before the anime adaptation by MAPPA began. The series started in 2000 and has enough content for more than two seasons, but given the long wait between seasons one and two, it could be a while before the full story is animated. The manga’s bizarre and unique story seemed difficult to adapt, but MAPPA has proven capable of bringing fantastical tales to life.

If you haven’t watched Dorohedoro yet, prepare for a crazy adventure! The first season introduces Caiman, a man with a lizard head due to a mysterious curse. He’s on a quest to find the sorcerer who did this to him and recover his lost memories. Along with his friend Nikaido, he battles evil magic users in a bizarre and dangerous world.

The first season of the show was only available on Netflix, but season two will be streamed on Crunchyroll instead, showing how competitive the anime streaming landscape is. It’s currently unknown whether the English voice actors will reprise their roles, but fans are hoping to see Aleks Le and Reba Buhr, who voiced the main characters, return.
