As I pen this down, authorities have recently suspended their dig at a site in Hertfordshire, having harbored expectations of unearthing Muriel McKay’s remains. The use of “hoped” is fitting as it has been a painful 55-year wait for her family. In 1969, Muriel, married to a newspaper executive, became the unfortunate victim of a kidnapping – an unheard-of crime in the UK at the time. This poignant documentary was produced with their consent, and its title reflects their enduring struggle. BY DAVID HEPWORTH

What is the essence of Disney? Is it the stories, movies, characters (classic and new acquisitions from Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars) or merchandising? Or the theme parks that in 2023 made up 70 per cent of the company’s operating income? In 1983, Disney was on the ropes until CEO Michael Eisner returned the House of Mouse to what it did best: magical entertainment. This podcast explores what came next and whether the decades of subsequent multi-media expansion can be sustained. JEREMY ASPINALL

As a food enthusiast with a deep appreciation for history and culture, I find myself utterly captivated by Neil Buttery’s podcast, “The Food Historian.” In many ways, it reminds me of the BBC Radio 4 program “In Our Time” with Melvyn Bragg. However, instead of delving into various academic topics, Buttery explores the rich and diverse world of food history.

Host Simon Mundie’s voice might be recognizable to some: he previously reported on sports for Radio 1 and Radio 4’s “Today” program. However, this professional experience sparked a curiosity in him about the excessive focus on outcomes, strategies, and triumph. As a result, he created this podcast series as an alternative perspective to the cult of success. In each episode, Simon engages with various guests, including individuals from the sports community and philosophers, neuroscientists, and broadcasters, to discuss how one can fully actualize their abilities without being fixated on becoming “the winner.”

I, Tom Goulding, firmly believe that no one is more suited than the brilliant storytellers behind Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto to create an enthralling 12-part drama about a digital game world project turning sour. This intriguing concept is brought to life by Absurd Ventures, a company established by Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser, who shares this meta vision. Prepare for goosebumps as this thrilling series featuring renowned actors Andrew Lincoln and Paterson Joseph unfolds, serving as an ominous prelude to an eagerly anticipated video game title nestled within the same universe.

In the tale of Brazilian ex-model Kat Torres, the term “influencer” takes on a darker connotation. To over a million of her Instagram audience, she seemed like a lifestyle guide. However, behind closed doors, she was covertly enlisting a group of susceptible young women whom she either exploited as unpaid laborers or forced into sex work. After a nine-month probe by the BBC, presenter Hannah Price spoke with Torres in a Brazilian prison, where she was held, awaiting trial for human trafficking. (David McGillivray)

When the Zombies, a British band, became successful in America in 1969, there was a small issue: they had disbanded two years prior. Unfazed, an American promoter with questionable ethics recruited four Texan musicians to impersonate them, despite the authentic band having five members. The production of Daniel Ralston’s show faces challenges as well: many key figures are missing, deceased, or unable to recall the details. (Matt Glasby)
