Deadpool & Wolverine Actor Shares One Big Complaint About the Film (& They’re Right)

Actress Morena Baccarin, who played a key role in the movies featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, voiced her main concern about the film during an interview on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, “Inside of You”. During the discussion, she spoke fondly of her time on set with the rest of the cast. However, she felt frustrated that her character, Vanessa, didn’t receive enough screen time despite being crucial to the movie’s emotional heart. Baccarin pointed out that Wade Wilson’s relationship with Vanessa is his primary driving force in the story, but unfortunately, Vanessa often takes a back seat for significant portions of the film.

Baccarin found it fascinating to watch the movie given how much depth and impact was created in such a limited production period. She emphasized that the film’s heart lies in the relationship between Wade and Vanessa. As she put it, “I am the motivation for his existence, his desire to improve, and his journey. This was true for both films.”

What makes this interesting, Baccarin added, is that these are big-scale franchises with numerous decision-makers. It’s a pity, she said, that despite the female character playing such a pivotal role in the story at its onset, she doesn’t receive enough screen time or a fulfilling narrative arc.

Last summer saw the premiere of the dynamic duo, Deadpool & Wolverine, offering Marvel Studios a refreshing break from the challenges presented by the Multiverse Saga. This exhilarating collaboration garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews and raked in over $1 billion at the global box office, placing it as the second highest-grossing film of the year (slightly overshadowed by Pixar’s Inside Out 2). However, Marvel has yet to announce any future Deadpool ventures. Recently, Kevin Feige hinted at active discussions revolving around reassembling Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman for a potential return, but as of now, nothing concrete has come to fruition.

As a dedicated fan, I’d be thrilled if Deadpool 4 were to happen and Morena Baccarin’s character, Vanessa, got a bigger part. Last autumn, she hinted at her desire to portray Copycat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the films haven’t touched upon this yet, it’s worth mentioning that in the comics, Vanessa is indeed a mutant known as Copycat, with the remarkable ability to shapeshift. This deadly mercenary has been involved in some iconic missions, like when she successfully infiltrated X-Force by impersonating Domino.

Despite enjoying her time working alongside her fellow cast members, Baccarin’s disappointment about how Vanessa has been portrayed in the “Deadpool” movies is understandable. As she hinted in her statements, the treatment of Vanessa in “Deadpool 2,” where she was essentially used as a plot device whose death fueled Deadpool’s motivation, sparked controversy. Although Vanessa doesn’t meet her end again in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” her character remains underdeveloped in the third installment. Initially, it’s clear that Wade is trying to mend his relationship with Vanessa and reconnect, but unfortunately, Vanessa herself isn’t a significant part of this journey. This stands in stark contrast to the first “Deadpool” film, where Baccarin had more substantial screen time, and the dynamic between her character and Wade was more fully developed, creating a convincing portrayal of their love for each other.

In essence, Baccarin has some understanding of Vanessa’s comic book background, which makes her enthusiasm for more screen time reasonable. Vanessa holds significant potential to become a memorable character, but so far, the filmmakers have primarily focused on Deadpool’s collaborations with characters like Cable and Wolverine. However, given Vanessa’s importance in Deadpool’s cinematic journey, it seems fitting for her to have a more substantial role in future films. Fingers crossed that this might be an opportunity for the creative team to delve into uncharted territories of Wade and Vanessa’s relationship in ‘Deadpool 4’.
