Death in Paradise’s Don Gilet teases new character: ‘There’s more to her than meets the eye’

The popular show Death in Paradise is coming back for a fifteenth season! Fans will be happy to hear that Selwyn is returning as the police commissioner, and the Saint Marie police department is welcoming a new sergeant.

Catherine Garton, who plays Mattie Fletcher, describes her character as a friendly and approachable older sister figure. Mattie is laid-back and quickly becomes part of the group. She’s also capable and playful, able to both stand up to and enjoy teasing Mervin, and generally blends in seamlessly.

Mattie can be impulsive and loves excitement, which sometimes leads her into tricky situations, Garton explained.

Don Gilet agreed, calling Mattie highly professional but also noting her unusual work style. This approach actually creates a strong sense of mutual respect between Mattie and Sergeant Mervin, likely because he appreciates her unconventional methods.

Gilet admitted he often approaches work differently than others, and while that can sometimes hurt team performance, he believes it’s a risk worth taking. He warned that his methods could be risky.

“That’s where you see that professional side of him going, ‘That’s not the way to do things.’

However, there are subtle instances where it seems like the work acknowledges and even appreciates someone going above and beyond, even if it involves risk.

Gilet hinted that Mattie has a hidden past that will be revealed throughout the series, suggesting she’s more complex than she initially appears. Ɖlizabeth Bourgine added further detail to this idea.

Catherine and Mattie share a history that will be revealed later, but Catherine is familiar with Mattie from her youth and knows quite a bit about her. Don Warrington also complimented both the character and actress Garton, praising them for adding an exciting new energy to the show, Death in Paradise.

He described it as a welcome change, saying, “Getting to know the character also means learning about yourself. You connect with someone different, which forces you to see things from a new point of view.”

It’s always thrilling for actors to discover something new in a role—a fresh perspective or a different way to approach the character. That keeps things interesting, and I think that’s exactly what we’ve seen with this show.

It seems Garton has taken over the role of Darlene Curtis, previously played by Ginny Holder. Holder’s character was explained as being absent last year to care for a sick aunt, with only a quick appearance through a video call.

The fifteenth season’s first episode reveals Darlene won’t be around for a while, likely due to the actress’s commitment to another show – she’s filming the third season of the BBC thriller, The Capture.

The fifteenth season of the show arrives on January 30th, with most of the original cast returning. This season, Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson continues to settle into life on Saint Marie while investigating a series of puzzling cases. He’s also trying to build a relationship with his newly found half-brother, Solomon, but quickly discovers they don’t have much in common.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson is dealing with the consequences of being away, and after a frank conversation with Catherine Bordey, a long-time friend, he resolves to regain the islanders’ confidence.

Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas and Officer Sebastian Rose are helping new recruit Sergeant Mattie Fletcher adjust to the team, but her past is starting to create complications.

Death in Paradise airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
