Death in Paradise’s Don Warrington says fans are “right to worry” about Selwyn following major decision

Okay, so last time we saw Selwyn on Death in Paradise, it was a huge moment – he’d actually retired after 50 years with the police! He’d decided to leave everything behind, which was really surprising and a bit sad, but you could see he needed a change.

He was briefly replaced by a younger colleague, but those in charge soon realized their mistake and offered him his position back, understanding how valuable he was to the company.

Despite being unhappy without his old job’s uniform, Selwyn turned down the offer to return.

He told Catherine that agreeing felt wrong, given everything that had happened. He added that he didn’t see a path forward to restoring their relationship to how it used to be.

And it seems he remains committed to that decision for the time being.

He’s made a choice, but what will happen now is anyone’s guess. Will he stick with it, or change his mind? Will something come along to influence the outcome? I honestly don’t know.

Responding to Tobi Bakare’s thoughts on the show continuing without him, Warrington acknowledged Bakare’s point that ‘Don is an integral part of the show,’ but also highlighted Bakare’s belief in the show’s resilience. Bakare had previously suggested the show has a strong formula that allows it to adapt and continue successfully, even with changes.

Warrington chuckled and replied, “I disagree.” He acknowledged Toby’s right to his viewpoint but planned to call him later to discuss it further.

Mervin never really had a father, so this man has become like one to him. Just as Mervin is finally feeling at home in Saint Marie and starting to belong, the person who helped him get there – and who truly understands him – might be leaving.

Will we ever see him again? It’s hard to imagine this place without him. I’m also worried about Mervin – I don’t think he can handle the stress without someone stable to support him and keep him focused.

It’s odd to imagine him gone, and the characters in the story need to come to terms with that.

Although Selwyn is enjoying his retirement, the Saint Marie police force is busy preparing for a special holiday episode.

A company Christmas party turns deadly when four colleagues discover a dead body in the pool of their Caribbean villa, according to the official description of the story.

Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson and his team discovered the murder weapon, but were puzzled to find it had been secured in a drawer at the time of the killing. Even more strangely, the drawer was located thousands of miles away in Swindon, far from where the crime happened!

“Stuck in Saint Marie, the team calls on the help of a familiar face to crack the case…”

Mervin is struggling to balance work and his personal life, especially while he nervously awaits news from his brother. This makes it hard for him to fully enjoy the Christmas festivities on Saint Marie.

Will Mervin be able to work through his personal problems and find some holiday cheer, both for his team and the whole island?

The show stars Don Gilet as the Detective Inspector, and also features Shantol Jackson as Naomi Thomas, Élizabeth Bourgine as Catherine Bordey, Ginny Holder as Darlene Curtis, and Shaquille Ali-Yebuah as Sebastian Rose.

The episode features guest appearances by Josie Lawrence, known from EastEnders; Kate Ashfield, who starred in Shaun of the Dead and Sanditon; Pearl Mackie, famous for her roles in Doctor Who and The Diplomat; James Baxter (Waterloo Road, Still Open All Hours, Emmerdale); Billy Harris (Ted Lasso); and Alix Serman.
