Selwyn Patterson has faced a lot of difficulties recently on the BBC show Death in Paradise. He nearly died after being shot in season 13, and then was unexpectedly replaced last season by an actor who didn’t measure up. It’s been a very rough time for his character.
Don Warrington, the actor, suggests viewers shouldn’t expect things to get easier for the police commissioner anytime soon.
When asked if things would be slowing down for him, he replied at the TopMob Covers Party 2026, ‘Definitely not.’ He explained that Selwyn just isn’t the type to relax or settle down – it’s simply part of who he is.
I’m really curious to know if the commissioner feels any differently about Warrington now, considering everything that’s happened and how much things have changed for everyone here. It’s been a tough time, and I wonder if his perspective has shifted at all.
“I definitely believe that,” he agreed. “He’s returned feeling refreshed and will approach the island with a new strategy.”
“I think he’s going to be a new man, remade.”

It’s been tough for everyone here on Saint Marie since that whole thing with Selwyn. We really rallied to get him his job back, and honestly, we were all pretty hurt when he turned it down and left. It’s still something we’re all trying to get over as we start this new season.
After taking Catherine’s advice, he begins trying to regain people’s trust, but the synopsis suggests it won’t be easy, and convincing Saint Marie to forgive him might be the biggest challenge.
You know, watching this show, it’s become really clear that Élizabeth Bourgine’s character is the voice of reason. She basically points out to her team that they’ve lost the islanders’ trust, and they need to fix that if they want to be seen as a legitimate police force again. She told the BBC that’s the key to everything.
A key theme of the show is the community of Saint Marie learning to trust and support each other. So, when Selwyn departed, it felt like a real letdown and a breach of that trust for the islanders.
Catherine helps the team understand the current situation and what steps they need to take next.
With so much happening, and Selwyn potentially leaving the show, can we finally relax knowing Warrington intends to stay for the foreseeable future?
There’s no doubt about it: if he were to leave the show, fans of Death in Paradise would be furious.
Don Warrington mentioned that people expressed strong disappointment when he announced he was leaving.
It’s nice to hear, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pleased. I was just surprised by how much people connected with the characters.
He said he’s taking things one year at a time, explaining that this approach has always worked for him and will continue to be his plan for the future.
He’s officially returned to his position as commissioner, and his team now faces a series of challenging and mysterious cases.
A new sergeant, Mattie Fletcher, has taken over from Darlene Curtis. Meanwhile, Mervin is finally meeting his half-brother, Solomon, but the meeting doesn’t go as well as he expected.
Even though more challenges are on the horizon, Selwyn’s calm and steady personality is incredibly important right now.
Welcome back, sir.
