Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Director Adds Easter Eggs to Games to Reward Long-Time Fans

Hideo Kojima’s games are well-known for hidden details and surprises. However, in a recent interview with The Washington Post, Kojima explained that these aren’t meant to be about him. Instead, he includes them as a special treat for longtime fans who have played his earlier games.

I was reading an interview with Kojima, and he was talking about how his games always feel connected. He basically said that because it’s him making them, there’s bound to be a lot of overlap! He also admitted he loves hiding little Easter eggs and references – like the white whales – as a fun treat for us fans. He doesn’t want to call it ‘copying himself,’ but he sees it as a way to reward those of us who have been playing his games for years.

During the same interview, Kojima revealed he hadn’t originally planned a sequel to *Death Stranding*. He initially intended it to be a standalone project, his first as head of an independent studio. But as he developed the game, ideas for new stories and side plots began to emerge. He first considered these possibilities while thinking about potential sequels, spin-offs, and downloadable content during the game’s development.

Creative ideas for the story, including new plotlines and characters, started coming to him easily. Even during the making of the project, he was already brainstorming possibilities for future additions like downloadable content, sequels, and spin-off stories. He also wanted to develop a core concept he called a ‘rope game,’ believing it needed more explanation and a stronger foundation.

He believed the core idea – delivering packages using a rope – was more important to establish as a new game mechanic than focusing on the story or overall world it took place in.

Kojima explained why he’s stopped using misleading trailers for his games. He used to be known for this – for example, with *Metal Gear Solid 2*, trailers didn’t reveal that Raiden would be the main character for most of the game, instead of the popular Solid Snake. However, he says the way media works now is why he’s being more upfront with trailers for *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach*.

Hideo Kojima recalled that Harrison Ford was cast as the Red Hulk in *Captain America: Brave New World*, but the news leaked before the official reveal. He said this happened because information spreads so quickly today, and he intentionally used this spoiler situation as a central idea in his work.

He explained he didn’t want the story to be predictable, like something you can easily guess from a movie or book. Instead, he aimed for a satisfying experience after a long investment – around 60 hours of gameplay – where a happy ending feels earned and aligns with the player’s initial hopes. He intentionally included subtle clues and ‘spoilers’ throughout the game to achieve this effect.
