
Ahead of the release of Kojima Productions’ *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach*, composer Yoann “Woodkid” Lemoine revealed something surprising: Director Hideo Kojima actually altered the story because playtesters enjoyed it *too* much. He changed the script and key plot points because he wanted to create more emotional impact and division among players – he felt the original version wasn’t provoking strong enough reactions.
Hideo Kojima recently told The Washington Post that a comment he made was misinterpreted. He explained, with a smile, that he never intended to be deliberately strange. He’d said he wanted to create a game that wasn’t easily consumed, because experiences that linger with you are more impactful. He simply wants to approach game design in a new way.
Based on player feedback, he improved the game to be more enjoyable and easier to play. This includes a wider range of gameplay options – players can explore landscapes like those in the original game, fight openly, or use stealth, and even combine these approaches. Players also gain access to vehicles earlier, and the game moves at a faster pace overall.
