For Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, director Hideo Kojima really wanted to ensure players would complete the game. Lead level designer Hiraoki Yoshiike explained to PCGamer that the original Death Stranding required a lot of explanation of its new ideas and world, which some players found to be a bit slow. They aimed to address this in the sequel.
Yoshiike explained that Kojima’s main goal was for players to finish and fully experience the game, and he specifically instructed the team to make that happen.
Later in the interview, he mentioned something really interesting about Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Apparently, the team decided to simplify some of the really complex world-building stuff. But don’t worry, he said that if you’re a completionist like me and love digging into all the details, there’s still plenty to find! For the rest of us though, it sounds like the game will have a more straightforward story path, without getting too lost in the weeds. I’m actually really glad to hear that – it sounds like they’re making it more accessible for everyone.
Yoshiike explained that for the second game, the team intentionally kept the world-building less complex. They wanted to offer enough detail for players who enjoy exploring lore, but also ensure the story was accessible to those who weren’t as interested. This design choice proved successful; they received positive feedback that DS2 was easier to recommend, and data showed players were progressing further into the game than before, confirming their design goals were met.
Hideo Kojima often adjusts his games based on what players think. For example, musician Yoann Lemoine (known as Woodkid) shared that the story of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was revised after people had already started testing early versions of the game back in June 2025.
I remember a really important moment during development, probably around the halfway point. Blake Lemoine told me he’d realized we had a serious issue, and he came to me to talk about it. It was a big deal!
He admitted they’d been playtesting the game, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive – almost too good. He felt this meant something was off, so he started making changes to the story and key game events. He believed his work wasn’t creating enough strong reactions or dividing opinions, and he wanted to fix that.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach came out on PlayStation 5 in June and received good reviews. Now, Kojima Productions and Nixxes have released the game on PC this month. You can read our review of the PC version, and also find out how many players jumped in to play it when it first launched.
