Death Stranding movie will not adapt the games but tell an original story, director confirms

The new A24 movie based on Death Stranding won’t retell the game’s story. Instead, it will feature a completely original story taking place within the game’s universe.

In December 2022, Kojima Productions revealed they were working with A24 to create a movie adaptation.

The latest film in the series will explore new territory, as announced during a recent livestream event celebrating Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary.

I was so excited when Michael Sarnoski, the director of films like ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ and ‘Pig’, came on stage with Hideo Kojima! They talked about the project and shared some really cool new information about the movie.

We’re aiming to truly capture the essence and core themes of the game with this project. However, we also want to tell a fresh story, introduce new characters, and fully explore both the grand scale of the world and the details of individual lives – doing justice to everything on both a large and small level.

As a fan, what I’m really hoping for is a new story – something fresh we haven’t seen before within this universe. It’s a tough balance, but I want it to be easy for newcomers to jump in and enjoy, while *also* rewarding those of us who are already huge fans and know the lore inside and out. It needs to appeal to everyone!

So, Kojima explained that Death Stranding is a pretty long game – like, 70 to 80 hours long! Because of that, they didn’t want to cram all that story and gameplay into a short, two-hour movie. It just wouldn’t have done the game justice, you know?

Honestly, I’m still wondering if we’ll see characters like Sam Porter Bridges and Fragile in the movie, and if the actors Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux will be involved. It’s a big question mark right now!

When Sarnoski was asked to lead the project, he said he was both honored and intimidated. He explained that taking on such a large undertaking felt especially daunting after the success and effort involved in making *A Quiet Place*.

It wasn’t until I met Hideo Kojima and spoke with A24 that I understood just how much creative freedom they were offering me for this project.

Although Hideo Kojima won’t be directing the movie due to his work on the upcoming Kojima Productions games, OD and Physint, he has stated he will still be heavily involved in its production.

In addition to the upcoming live-action series, an animated Death Stranding project, currently titled “Death Stranding Mosquito,” is also being developed. This animated series will feature a brand new, original story set within the Death Stranding universe.
