Defunct Netflix Animation Series is Returning (And It’s Sooner Than You Think)

Netflix has become a significant force in animation, but not every original show stays available on the platform indefinitely. Recently, several popular animated series, including She-Ra And The Princesses of Power, Tuca & Bertie, Dead End: Paranormal Park, and Inside Job, were removed due to licensing agreements. However, a long-running animated original is making a surprising return later this month, giving fans a chance to revisit its robotic world.

Fans were surprised to see Voltron: Legendary Defender leave Netflix in 2024, especially after its impressive eight-season run. The removal was likely due to licensing agreements, as the show was a collaboration with DreamWorks. Good news for fans, though: a complete DVD box set is now available for pre-order on the official website (link here!). It’s scheduled to ship on March 31st and will be one of the few ways to watch this popular anime remake.

Voltron’s Future

The creators of Voltron: Legendary Defender recently explained why the show left Netflix. They clarified that Netflix didn’t actually make the series – DreamWorks Animation did, and simply licensed it to Netflix. That licensing agreement has now ended. While the show hasn’t moved to another streaming platform yet, there’s a possibility Amazon could pick it up, given their current projects, and discussions about renewing the license are still happening.

Amazon MGM has completed filming a live-action version of Voltron, starring Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and Daniel Quinn-Toye. Although their specific roles haven’t been announced yet, we expect to hear more details as the movie is scheduled for release in 2027. Following the release of their live-action Masters of the Universe film this summer, Amazon appears to be heavily investing in revivals of popular franchises from the past.
