Delroy Lindo‘s family isn’t feeling any blues about his 2026 Oscars nomination.

I recently spoke with Delroy, and he shared something really sweet with me. He told me that Damiri – who’s currently based in Europe – was the very first person in the family to find out the good news! It’s always lovely when family gets to share those special moments, and it sounds like Damiri was right there at the beginning.
I was lying in bed when my phone rang. It was my son, and when I answered, I said, ‘Hey.’ He excitedly replied, ‘Dad, you did it! You actually did it!’
The 73-year-old said his son was thrilled, and explained that the event felt like things had come full circle.
It means so much to me because he’s experienced everything, both the glamorous side and the realities behind it,” Delroy explained. “He and my wife offer a complete understanding of this whole experience – they see it from every angle. That’s why it felt perfect to hear this news from my son.
The actor, who stars alongside Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value), Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn (both in One Battle After Another), is also excited about the other nominations for the film directed by Ryan Coogler. The 98th annual award show will air on ABC and stream on Hulu on March 15.
The movie Sinners received a remarkable 16 nominations, breaking the record for the most Oscar nominations ever given to a single film.
Delroy shared with TopMob how wonderful it is to see such a positive reaction to the work. He was especially pleased that audiences, both within and outside the industry, connected with it on a deep and meaningful level, truly touching people’s hearts.
Honestly, it’s hard to put into words how amazing it feels to be truly recognized and appreciated. It’s just… incredible. It’s one of those moments that really fills you up, and it’s a feeling I’ll cherish. It’s truly extraordinary!

Delroy isn’t the only actor from Sinners who’s been nominated for an Oscar for the first time. Michael B. Jordan is also a first-time nominee, recognized for his role as Smoke and Stack. Wunmi Mosaku received her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Annie in the film.
Delroy, known for his acclaimed performances in films like Malcolm X (1992) and Da 5 Bloods (2020), says his early talks with Ryan about life during the Jim Crow era were key to developing a well-rounded character for Delta Slim.
In a recent interview with The Ankler, he explained that he felt his role diminished during the second half of the film. He noted that the final version showed him with a much stronger presence than the initial script did.
