Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie smashes box office records after Japan release

The initial film for the “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” series, titled “Akaza’s Return”, set new benchmarks at Japanese box offices after its premiere a week ago, breaking previous records.

Instead of waiting until September for international viewers (including those from the UK and US), Japanese fans have already started watching the initial part of the movie trilogy featuring the return of Tanjiro.

In a statement issued by Aniplex, distributed through Crunchyroll, it was announced that the movie shattered all opening weekend box office records in the nation, and also set a new single-day box office earnings record since its premiere on July 18th.

On July 20th, a Sunday, the movie broke the one-day box office record by earning approximately £10.2 million or 2.03 billion yen on that very day.

On the weekend, the film’s earnings on Sunday contributed to it becoming the Japanese cinema record holder for the highest-grossing three-day opening weekend ever, earning approximately 5.52 billion yen (equivalent to £27.7 million) from Friday through Sunday.

Across its opening four days, the film reportedly brought in 7.31 billion yen (£36.7 million).

At present, the film stands as the second highest earning movie of 2025 in Japan, trailing slightly behind Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback. However, it appears set to claim the number one position in the near future.

In its opening weekend, the movie “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” – Infinity Castle Arc Chapter One: Akaza’s Return drew in 3,843,613 viewers (generating a box office revenue of approximately 5.52 billion yen) over three days. This number grew to 5,164,348 viewers (with a box office revenue of about 7.31 billion yen) when accounting for Monday and holidays, demonstrating an immense interest from the public. We are deeply grateful to every one of you who chose to watch it in theaters.

Previously, the highest box office earnings were achieved by the film “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” released in Japan in October 2020, during a time when movie theaters operated at reduced capacity due to the ongoing pandemic.

The movie “Akaza’s Return” is scheduled to be released on the 12th of September in the United Kingdom, and there are plans for two additional Demon Slayer films to conclude the series.

The anime narrates the story of Tanjiro, who transforms into a demon slayer following the brutal murder of his family and the transformation of his younger sister into a demon. Previously, this tale had produced four critically acclaimed seasons before the trilogy was released.
