As Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle nears its North American theater debut in a matter of hours, anime enthusiasts might appreciate a refresher on some of the epic battles anticipated within the movie’s runtime. Characters Tanjiro and Giyu are set to engage in one of the series’ most significant encounters against Akaza, Zenitsu will square off against a demonic force from his past, and Insect Hashira Shinobu will face off against one of Muzan’s most sinister lieutenants, Doma. Not long ago, our team at egmr.ru had the opportunity to discuss their roles in portraying Doma and Shinobu with Stephen Fu and Erika Harlacher, offering tantalizing hints about the intense battle that lies ahead for these characters.
As an enthusiastic storyteller, I delved into portraying the enigmatic character of Doma – a seemingly carefree demon with a hidden maliciousness. I found that his charm lies in his childlike spirit and endless playfulness, always acting like the mischievous little brother among the Upper Ranks, much to everyone’s annoyance. He doesn’t see himself as a villain but rather as someone simply having fun, and doing what he thinks is right.
Drawing from personal experiences with little brothers and their antics, I brought Doma to life as if he was one of my own bothers, creating a character that audiences can relate to and understand, even if they can’t empathize with his malicious intentions. After all, everyone has had a little brother or someone in their lives who acted just like Doma!
In a stark contrast from Doma’s indifference, Harlacher highlighted his unique approach in portraying Shinobu in “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle”. Unlike Doma, Shinobu is deeply invested in the current events. The recent death of the Demon Slayer Corps leader has plunged them into a new situation where they’ve been separated, and each moment is brimming with emotions. So far, Shinobu has been adept at hiding her feelings, but this time around, it’s about peeling back those layers and uncovering the depth of her emotions. The prospect of delving into her emotional side vocally was truly thrilling for me as an observer.
Demons Vs. Hashira
In an exciting turn of events, we proposed a hypothetical scenario where Stephen Fu and Erika Harlacher chose roles from the opposite factions. If they were to swap sides, Doma’s voice actor might join the Demon Slayer Corps, while Shinobu’s voice actor could potentially be part of Muzan’s bloodline. Erika expressed a keen interest in portraying Nezuko, stating, “If I wanted to push my boundaries as a voice actress, I wouldn’t dare try to replace Abby Trott, who is truly exceptional. But Nezuko is an intriguing character to act. There’s so much depth there, and kudos to Abby for maintaining her voice after all the intense screaming Nezuko does. She’s a multifaceted character.
From another perspective, Fu would be thrilled to take on the role of Zenitsu, the young swordsman with an electrical specialty. “I find Zenitsu fascinating,” Fu says, “since I’ve always been drawn to characters who are underestimated yet possess incredible power. He may seem comedic at first, but when things become serious, he truly shines.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle hits North American theaters on September 12th.
