Please be aware that this article reveals key plot points from the Demon Slayer manga. Shinobu Kocho is a fan-favorite character who tragically died early in the Infinity Castle arc. As the Insect Hashira, she was incredibly skilled, but facing the powerful Upper Rank Two demon—without unlocking a special Demon Slayer Mark—proved too difficult, even for her. While she couldn’t sever a demon’s head, Shinobu was a master of poisons derived from Wisteria, which could effectively kill them. Traditionally, the Demon Slayer Corps defeats demons by exposing them to sunlight or beheading them with a Nichirin blade. However, Shinobu discovered and exploited another weakness: the Wisteria flower.
Demons have a strange weakness to a specific flower, and they actively stay far away from it. Shinobu uses powerful poisons that only affect demons, combining them with her unique Insect Breathing style. This skill allowed her to become a Hashira, but even her strongest poisons were easily overcome by the demon Doma. Shinobu is an incredibly gifted character in the world of Demon Slayer, but another character also possesses great knowledge of poisons and medicine, and she proved to be a helpful ally to the Demon Slayer Corps.
Shinobu Worked With Tamayo During the Demon Slayer’s Hashira Training Arc

Shinobu was assigned to develop a drug to defeat Muzan, but she had to collaborate with Tamayo and Yushiro. Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, anticipated the coming final battle and had already invited Tamayo to join their efforts. Shinobu was skilled at making poisons to kill demons, while Tamayo possessed centuries of expertise in the study of demons themselves.
Driven by a desire for revenge against the original demon, she dedicated roughly 500 years to finding a way to defeat him, ultimately succeeding in creating a drug to kill him with the assistance of Shinobu. This drug was vital to Muzan’s downfall; without it, the entire Demon Slayer Corps would likely have been destroyed, and Muzan’s reign of terror would have continued. Despite understanding the importance of collaborating with Tamayo, Shinobu struggled to contain her anger at having to work alongside a demon.
During the Hashira Training, she struggled with her temper, but meeting Kanao Tsuyuri helped her become more emotionally balanced. Although Shinobu didn’t seem pleased about teaming up with Tamayo, their partnership ultimately fulfilled a long-held dream of her sister, Kanae, a dream Shinobu later took on herself after Kanae passed away.
Shinobu’s Dream Was Influenced By Her Sister’s Kindness

Kanae Kocho, known as the Flower Hashira, was a compassionate person, much like Tanjiro, and felt sympathy even for demons. She dreamed of a future where humans and demons could live together peacefully. Even as she was dying from a wound inflicted by Doma, Kanae never gave up on that hope. Her sister, Shinobu, witnessed Kanae’s final moments and vowed to avenge her, even though she knew she wasn’t strong enough to defeat a demon on her own. For years, Shinobu dedicated herself to fulfilling that promise, masking her pain with the cheerful smile Kanae always loved.
From the very beginning, she hoped to befriend demons, even though she secretly found them repulsive. She initially tried to fulfill her sister’s wish, but later realized Tanjiro was better suited to carry it out. Like many Demon Slayers, Shinobu was deeply saddened by the loss of her loved ones at the hands of demons. So, even when she finally achieved her long-held dream of working with a demon, it didn’t bring her any joy.
Shinobu strongly disliked the thought of ever forming a bond with a demon. While she grew to accept Nezuko, she never changed her feelings about other demons, and this resentment fueled her determination to defeat Doma. Though she didn’t survive to witness the final battle, she likely believed her poison would be effective and that her friends would complete the work she and Tamayo had begun.
