The world of Demon Slayer is a dark and dangerous place, filled with suffering caused by man-eating demons. These creatures are incredibly strong, heal rapidly, and some even possess special powers known as Blood Demon Art. They hunt humans at night, and are notoriously difficult to kill – they can only be destroyed under specific circumstances. This is why the Demon Slayer Corps, a secret organization founded over 1,000 years ago by the Ubuyashiki Family, tirelessly works to protect people from these terrifying demons. The Corps operates from the shadows, and their heroic acts often go unnoticed.
Many members of the Demon Slayer Corps, including the hidden support staff known as the Kakushi, are driven by personal loss – they’ve lost loved ones. This shared experience fuels their determination to create a future where others are spared the pain of witnessing brutal murders. The Ubuyashiki family, while not fighters themselves, provide vital support and fair compensation to the Slayers. They’re often portrayed as heroes, but it’s worth considering whether that image is entirely accurate.
Demon Slayer’s Ubuyashiki Family Conducted a Brutal Final Selection Exam

Kagaya Ubuyashiki clearly cared deeply for the Demon Slayer Corps, often seeing its members as family. He personally visited the graves of those who died in battle, despite his own poor health. However, the series doesn’t fully explore how harsh the Final Selection exam was. Every year, dozens of candidates, many of whom were still teenagers, lost their lives during it, which is a disturbing aspect of the story.
The exam simulated a survival situation in a demon-infested forest, but it was excessively harsh for those without actual combat experience. It aimed to demonstrate the terrifying nature of demons and the difficulty of fighting them, reflecting the high death rate among Demon Slayers during missions. Despite understanding the dangers, it seems unreasonable that an organization dedicated to protecting people would willingly put young trainees in such a life-threatening situation when preventable measures could have been taken.
The week-long exam, conducted without providing any supplies or escape routes, demonstrates a shocking disregard for the participants’ well-being on the part of both the Ubuyashiki family and the Demon Slayer Corps. Because there were no experienced Demon Slayers monitoring the exam, participants couldn’t quit once inside the forest. The Corps seemingly didn’t care if the examinees lived or died, or if they suffered terribly during the process.
The Hand Demon Should’ve Been Killed by the Corps Long Ago

Looking back, the whole story with the Hand Demon who killed Sabito just doesn’t add up. It was unusually strong, easily defeating experienced Demon Slayers and consistently targeting students of Sakonji Urokodaki. It seemed pretty obvious what the demon was up to, and someone should have dealt with it sooner. Even after Sabito’s death and Giyu barely making it out alive, nobody finished off the Hand Demon to prevent more deaths, which always struck me as strange.
Kagaya Ubuyashiki can foresee events, so he knew Tanjiro met Tamayo and everything else happening around him. This ability isn’t unique to him; all leaders of the Demon Slayer Corps share it. It’s hard to believe he wouldn’t have known about the Hand Demon and would have simply let children be harmed just because they wanted to join the Corps.
The story seems to disregard the dangerous demons that young recruits will encounter in the forest. It’s strange and disappointing how quickly the series moves past this crucial detail. While Demon Slayer is meant to be a dark and frightening fantasy, the Final Selection Exam feels unnecessarily brutal and lacks a good explanation, even within the context of the story.
