The PlayStation 5 remake of Demon’s Souls has been updated to work with Sony’s new energy-saving settings.
If you’re unaware, a recent software update added a power-saving option to the latest console generation.
PlayStation says this is part of their ongoing effort to reduce energy use. However, some people think it could also be a way for them to quietly test a potential new portable gaming device that’s been rumored for a while.
We tried out the new profile in the remake of the PS3 game, and it caused the framerate to decrease to 30fps. The graphics also suffered, as the game ran at a noticeably lower resolution.
The most important thing is that power consumption drops significantly. We saw a decrease from about 230 watts on an original PS5 down to under 100 watts – a really noticeable change.
That’s far less than the 25 watts or so needed to power a handheld device, but a real portable version would likely have features that improve efficiency and make up some of the difference. It’s definitely a promising development.
If you’re not serious about conserving energy, we advise against using power saving mode while playing Demon’s Souls.
The game runs fine with these settings, but it looks and feels much smoother at 60 frames per second in 4K. We’re not sure the reduced power usage is worth sacrificing that visual quality.
If you spent around 50 hours finishing Demon’s Souls, using the lower-spec feature would save you about a penny in energy costs during your game. It’s a small amount, and probably not a big reason to change settings.
