As a longtime wrestling fan who’s seen it all from the Attitude Era to today, I can confidently say that the current state of AEW’s women’s division is nothing short of inspiring. It’s like a breath of fresh air, and it’s long overdue. The recent addition of Mercedes Mon? has certainly shaken things up, but the real game-changers for me have been Toni Storm, Mariah May, Willow Nightingale, Kris Statlander, and Deonna Purrazzo. Their matches are nothing short of masterpieces, and I can’t wait to see what they do next, especially at AEW All In later this month.
The women’s division in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is experiencing one of its most exciting phases since the company was founded in 2019. The arrival of Mercedes Mon? has led to significant adjustments in the allocation of time for female wrestlers. Although there’s still room for improvement, things have been progressing positively since her debut. Apart from her bout with AEW original Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D., Toni Storm and Mariah May are delivering critically acclaimed performances in preparation for their title match at AEW All In later this month.
As a wrestling enthusiast, it’s clear that the shifts in the industry aren’t being overlooked. Even legends from outside my preferred organization, such as the esteemed WWE Hall of Famers Nikki and Brie Garcia (The Bella Twins), have shown interest, almost inking deals. In the past week alone, another WWE Hall of Famer, Beth Phoenix, opted not to renew her contract with WWE, possibly due to her husband Adam Copeland’s involvement in AEW, making a move here more feasible for them. Though she was absent from WWE television for quite some time, if she joins AEW, there’s no doubt she would find a suitable place among the talented roster. Purrazzo recently expressed her delight about this possibility, stating that she would “cherish” the opportunity to see wrestlers like Nikki, Brie, and Phoenix strengthening the women’s division in AEW.
Indeed, it sounds correct. “Definitely agreeing! It’s all about finding the balance in mentorship, you know? You’re there to guide, inspire, and offer your thoughts, but at the same time, helping the younger talent grow into even bigger and better stars is crucial. For me, it’s about the stories we can create together and ensuring that we both shine as a result.”
As a long-time wrestling fan with numerous encounters in this vibrant world, I can confidently say that Beth Phoenix would undeniably add an exceptional touch to any roster. Regrettably, I haven’t had the pleasure of working alongside her yet, but the prospect is nothing short of exhilarating. Given my acquaintance with Mickie James, revisiting that partnership would be nothing less than thrilling.
Purrazzo is set to go head-to-head with rival Thunder Rosa on AEW Collision this week in a Texas Bull Rope match. It will be the second Bull Rope match in AEW history as the first was done by Dustin Rhodes and Nick Comorato in 2021. The fixture will be a first-time match for the women, but a deserving one as their feud is the hottest non-title feud in the women’s division currently. The Bull Rope match was popularized by Dusty Rhodes in the 1970s. It has been used many times over the decades, including in NWA and WWE, most recently by Cody Rhodes who brought it back for his feud against Shinsuke Nakamura earlier this year.
