Terrific tidings for admirers of Dept. Q! The crime drama’s second season has been given a green light by Netflix following its highly successful 2025 debut.
The first season made its debut towards the end of May and remained in the top 10 shows on the streaming platform for six consecutive weeks, captivating viewers with its intricate plotlines.
In natural and easy to read language: The Department Q novel series, penned by Danish crime author Jussi Adler-Olsen, was brought to life on screen, featuring Matthew Goode from Downton Abbey as the main character Carl Morck – a detective with a challenging history who heads up a newly established team dedicated to solving long-unresolved cases.
Confirmed: Goode will rejoin his team for the second season. The ensemble also features Alexej Manvelov portraying Akram Salim, Leah Byrne as Detective Constable Rose Dickson, and Jamie Sives taking on the role of Detective Chief Inspector James Hardy.

Departments Q will once more find its setting and production base in Edinburgh, bringing back the gritty basement office to our television screens.
The initial season drew inspiration from Mercy, which is the first book in Adler-Olsen’s collection of nine novels. Previously, director Scott Frank indicated his intention to use The Absent One, the sequel, as a source of ideas for the upcoming season.
After the renewal was confirmed, Scott conveyed his appreciation for Netflix, the dedicated team, and our exceptional cast and crew, as they dared to support him yet again with his creative endeavor.
Goode expressed gratitude to the streamer for providing us with a chance to delve deeper into Department Q’s narrative threads.
He went on saying: “Our team, both cast and crew, is absolutely remarkable, led by the creative mastermind that is Scott Frank. I am eagerly anticipating the brilliant ideas he’ll bring to life with his writing talent.
Executive producer Rob Bullock at Left Bank Pictures mentioned: “We’re moving down to Dept. Q for a second round.
At Left Bank Pictures, we’re filled with anticipation as we wonder what Scott has planned for his character, Carl Morck. Alongside the rest of the dynamic team do-lally, we eagerly await his next move. Kudos to Netflix for giving them the freedom to create once more.
I can hardly contain my excitement! Carl Morck and his delightful team of oddballs at Department Q are calling us back, and Netflix is taking us there again!” (Mona Qureshi & Manda Levina)
