Derry Girls creator’s “dark, dangerous and hilarious” new Netflix show confirms release date with first look featuring Unforgotten star

Four years after the popular Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls finished, its creator, Lisa McGee, is returning with a new show.

The new Netflix series from McGee, a dark comedy and mystery called ‘How to Get to Heaven from Belfast,’ has a confirmed release date.

All eight episodes, each an hour long, will be released on February 12th, so the wait is almost over – less than a month remains!

The announcement came with a brand new trailer, offering fans a first real glimpse of the upcoming show – and a surprise appearance by Saoirse-Monica Jackson, known for her role in Derry Girls. You can view the trailer now.

The new series features a talented cast including Roísín Gallagher (known for The Dry), Sinéad Keenan (Unforgotten), and Caoilfhionn Dunne (Industry). Tom Basden (Here We Go), Art Campion (Blue Lights), Michelle Fairley (Gangs of London), and Josh Finan (Waiting for the Out) also have significant roles.

I’m really excited about the cast they’ve assembled! Alongside the leads, we’ve got some fantastic actors like Bronagh Gallagher, who I loved in Brassic, Darragh Hand from Heartstopper, Ardal O’Hanlon – always great, even in Death in Paradise – Natasha O’Keeffe, who was brilliant in Peaky Blinders, and Emmett J Scanlan, who I thought was fantastic in MobLand. It’s a seriously strong ensemble!

Saoirse, a witty and unpredictable TV writer, Robyn, a polished but overwhelmed mom of three, and Dara, a reliable but reserved caretaker, have been best friends since childhood. Now in their late 30s, the three women are about to face a life-changing experience together.

So, I heard about this film – it starts when a woman gets an email saying a childhood friend, someone she hasn’t seen in years, has passed away. Then, at the wake, things get weird. It kicks off this crazy, darkly funny journey across Ireland and even further afield as she and the old gang try to figure out what really happened back in the day. It’s a bit spooky, a bit dangerous, but apparently, really hilarious too.

You can start watching ‘How to Get to Heaven from Belfast’ on Netflix beginning February 12th. Netflix subscriptions start at £5.99 per month and are also accessible through Sky Glass and Virgin Media.
