We initially assumed the Desperate Journey trailer depicted commuters struggling to get to work, given the recent London underground strike. The strike was over the drivers’ desire for an eight-hour workday and the option to work from home. However, it turns out the trailer is actually for a film based on a true story.
Desperate Journey is a thrilling, action-packed story unfolding in the vibrant burlesque scene of 1940s Paris. The film stars Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (1899), Clara Rugaard (I Am Mother), Til Schweiger (Inglourious Basterds), and Steven Berkoff (A Clockwork Orange). The story follows Freddie Knoller, who is compelled to escape Vienna as the Nazis advance. Finding himself alone and without money in Paris, and desperately needing identification, he accepts a position at a famous burlesque club known to be visited by Nazi officers. Within this alluring but risky environment, he becomes infatuated with the club’s star performer and gets caught up in a series of events that will drastically alter the course of his life.
As a movie lover, I’m really excited about this one! It’s directed by Annabel Jankel, who actually won an Emmy – you might remember her work on ‘Tell It to the Bees’ – reviewed HERE – and the script is by Michael Radford, a two-time Academy Award nominee and BAFTA winner (Il Postino). I’m glad to see Jankel has really found her stride after the, let’s just say *challenging*, live-action ‘Super Mario Bros’ back in ’93 – she’s clearly moved into much more substantial projects. The editing is in the capable hands of Academy Award nominee Jon Harris (127 Hours). Plus, the original score is by Ilan Eshkeri (Stardust) – a BAFTA and Emmy nominee – and it was recorded with a *full* orchestra! To top it all off, Richard Pryke, an Academy Award winner (Slumdog Millionaire), did the theatrical Dolby Atmos mix. Sounds incredible, right?
Desperate Journey opens exclusively in cinemas nationwide on 28th November 2025
