Just before its summer release, Illumination shared a trailer for Minions & Monsters during the Super Bowl, giving fans a first glimpse of the new movie. The trailer showed the story takes place in the 1920s and follows a group of Minions who, after finishing a film in Hollywood, decide to find a monster for their next big picture.
The recent setting of the Minions in the 1920s doesn’t quite fit with the story we’ve already been told in the Despicable Me movies. The first Minions movie showed us that the Minions were hidden away from the world for over 150 years, starting in 1812 after they parted ways with Napoleon and lasting until 1968. Bob, Kevin, and Stuart were the first Minions to venture out of their icy home after such a long period of isolation, all in search of a new boss.
The new movie, Minions & Monsters, will likely adjust the established backstory of the Despicable Me franchise. It suggests the main Minions may have started their adventures before the characters we know, Bob, Kevin, and Stuart, and that not all Minions were even present at the cave in 1812.
