Although Matt Mercer is stepping down from his role in Critical Role for Campaign 4, it doesn’t signify he’s leaving the series permanently. Since the inception of this popular fantasy role-playing program, Mercer has always been the one presiding over the table, coordinating the tabletop activities.
In the upcoming fourth Dungeons & Dragons campaign for our team, it was disclosed that Mercer would be relinquishing his role as the company leader, no longer directing the game for his group of voice actor friends, which includes renowned stars like Ashley Johnson from The Last of Us, Travis Willingham from Street Fighter, and Lauray Bailey from Marvel’s Spider-Man.
In October, we’re excitedly anticipating the start of Campaign 4 for the popular show “Critical Role”. Taking the reins from Mercer, who is stepping down, is Brennan Lee Mulligan, a newcomer best recognized for his work on the “Dimension 20” podcast.
Is Matt Mercer Leaving Critical Role?
After it was revealed that Brennan Lee Mulligan is taking over as game master for the highly anticipated Campaign 4 of Critical Role, some viewers are expressing concern that Matt Mercer might no longer be a part of the series.
Details about the initial phase of Campaign 4 were officially unveiled during Critical Role’s participation at GenCon 2025 held in Indianapolis.
A significant aspect of this announcement revealed that Mercer, who has been the game master since the beginning of Critical Role in 2015, will be temporarily relinquishing his position for the upcoming tabletop adventure. In his place, comedian and fellow Dungeons & Dragons aficionado Mulligan will take over.
Although it may seem like Mercer might exit the show completely, that’s not the case. Instead, he will be shifting positions and joining the players on the opposite side of the table for Campaign 4. Rather than controlling the story as the Dungeon Master, he’ll now be a player character himself.
In a long Instagram message, Mercer expressed his eagerness for something new in Campaign 4, stating, “I’ve been looking forward to really join forces and play at the game table with all my friends as player characters.
What a remarkable night (and GenCon) it has been! The morning after is hazy, but my enthusiasm for Campaign 4 knows no bounds. It’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to play as a character at the table with all my friends. To top it off, entrusting the game to Brennan Lee Mulligan, whom I admire and respect deeply, feels like an immense honor.
He admitted that it might require time for long-term viewers of the online series to adjust, but he appealed to them to “have faith in what we’ve prepared for this upcoming narrative featuring Mulligan and the cast – it promises to be something exceptionally unique.
As a loyal moviegoer who’s followed my reviews for the past decade, I assure you that the upcoming story, featuring an innovative collaboration with a familiar face, is something extraordinary. It’s unique, tailor-made to maintain the signature style and grandeur we’ve grown accustomed to together over these years. Keep your eyes peeled as we gradually disclose intriguing details and tantalizing revelations in the weeks ahead. I can hardly contain my excitement to introduce the fresh talent joining our esteemed cast, as they breathe life into this exciting new world!
He also confessed that his role as a game master hasn’t completely ended. The renowned voice actor further disclosed that he is still involved in organizing games, and his Critical Role escapades will persist through avenues such as live performances and the highly popular Vox Machina Amazon Prime Video animated series.
Rest assured, I’ll still be conducting games! Exandria lives on through our live performances, the animated series, various tales (including yours), and countless other times when I feel the urge to return to my world for a session. Additionally, there are more Age of Umbra sessions in store, along with other exciting projects that I’ll be overseeing, so you won’t see me retiring my Game Master screen any time soon.
All in all, love you all, and so, SO excited for this next chapter. I hope you come along with us.”
It’s evident that for Mercer and the team behind Critical Role, this marks the start of a fresh chapter for their beloved YouTube series. They are introducing new talent like Mulligan, allowing Mercer to realize his aspiration of experiencing the other side of the table and expanding his role-playing abilities in ways he hasn’t before.
From what Mercer posted on Instagram, it seems like Mulligan is merely the start of the fourth season’s cast. He subtly suggested that additional new characters might join the original group for this upcoming journey, which undoubtedly has fans eager for more thrilling dice-rolling action.
