Despite PS5 Hits, Sony Sinks to 21st in Metacritic’s Publisher Rankings

Okay, so Sony had some really great games drop in 2025 – I was super hyped for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei! But honestly, the rest of their lineup was a bit all over the place, and it meant they didn’t really climb the ranks on Metacritic’s latest publisher list like I thought they would.

Even though the system for organizing things is a bit confusing, the website is using review scores from last year’s games to rank them. The company that makes PlayStation was fourth overall in 2024, but this year they dropped to 21st place with an average review score of only 74.

It’s important to note a couple of things: the website’s overall score for the publisher is being lowered because it includes a few Destiny 2 expansions. Since PlayStation now owns Bungie, this inclusion does make sense, though.

Lost Soul Aside, a game many were excited about, unfortunately received a low score of 62, which negatively affected Sony’s overall average rating.

Even though PlayStation had some successes, like both Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei being nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards, 2025 wasn’t without its challenges for Sony.

Square Enix was named the top publisher with an average Metascore of 84. This success was driven by popular titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Octopath Traveler 0, and marks the first time the company has achieved this honor.

Capcom came in third place, largely thanks to excitement surrounding the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds. It makes you wonder if it would receive a different score if it were reviewed now. Microsoft secured fifth place with its numerous game releases, and the highest-rated of those was Forza Horizon 5 on PS5, scoring a 92.
