Despite the Anime’s Success, 2025 Was a Rough Year For Shonen Jump’s Beloved Action Comedy

Yuto Suzuki’s manga, *Sakamoto Days*, which first appeared in *Weekly Shonen Jump* in November 2020, quickly became known as one of the magazine’s best action comedies. Even before the anime adaptation, the series had a large and dedicated fanbase, so excitement for the anime was incredibly high. The story centers on Taro Sakamoto, a former assassin who was once the most feared hitman around. He left that life behind after falling in love and marrying Aoi. Now, five years after disappearing, he’s a little out of shape and enjoying a quiet life with his wife and daughter.

Taro’s peaceful life is shattered when he learns a billion-yen bounty has been placed on his head, threatening his entire family. He’s forced back into a dangerous world to protect them. The anime is well-regarded for its exciting fight scenes and the heartwarming story about family. According to What’s on Netflix, it quickly became a popular hit on the platform, even surpassing the viewership of the popular series Dandadan. Despite this success, the year proved to be one of the most challenging for the series.

Sakamoto Days’ Anime Sparked a Lot of Controversy

The anime quickly became popular on streaming platforms, but its release wasn’t without criticism – many fans disliked the animation style. The timing of the debut also worked against it, coming right after the end of the first season of the visually impressive anime *Dandadan*. Fans naturally drew comparisons between the two shows. Fortunately, the original manga was already successful, with over 4 million copies sold by December 2023.

Sales received a slight increase in May 2024, surpassing 5 million copies sold. By August 2025, over 15 million copies of the manga were in circulation – nearly four times the number since the anime first came out. Although the initial criticism faded and the *Sakamoto Days* anime performed well on streaming platforms, fans remained split on how well the adaptation was done.

The adaptation faced criticism for moving too quickly, leading to cuts and changes from the original story. While the series offers exciting action and humor, altering key character moments diminishes their nuance – something fans of the original manga strongly dislike.

Sakamoto Days’ Anime Still Hasn’t Confirmed a Season 2

The anime’s first season was released in two parts. The first part premiered in January 2025 as part of the Winter anime season, and the second part, which began in July, finished airing on September 23, 2025. Typically, popular shows quickly announce a continuation after a season ends, but this one didn’t follow that pattern.

The delay in announcing a new season could be due to production challenges, but we won’t know for sure until an official announcement is made. The anime covered 74 chapters of the manga, just starting the JAA Infiltration Arc. With the last episode ending on a cliffhanger, fans are anxious to find out what happens next. The manga still has many exciting storylines to tell, and the story continues to build in intensity beyond the JAA Infiltration Arc.

Sakamoto Days Manga Is in Its Final Phase

On top of the wait for news about Season 2, fans of the manga are also facing the upcoming end of the series. Though the exact release date of the finale is still unknown, the manga reached its final arc in July 2025. Currently, the story is in the ‘New JAA Arc,’ where a dangerous plan by Kei Uzuki throws the country into chaos and causes society to crumble. Taro and his friends must work together and fight with everything they have to stop him before it’s too late.

New chapters of the exciting manga are released weekly, and the story is quickly building towards its ending. You can currently watch the *Sakamoto Days* anime on Netflix. Plus, a live-action movie is planned for 2026, hinting at even more to come from this series.
