Destiny 2: Renegades Gets New ViDoc Showcasing Story and Gameplay

Bungie recently unveiled a fresh ViDoc for their forthcoming expansion of Destiny 2, titled Renegades. The video, which can be viewed below, showcases several key players from the game’s development team discussing the diverse elements of the upcoming expansion. Particular emphasis is given to the experience of confronting the perils of the lawless frontier.

A key feature highlighted in the video about the upcoming expansion of Destiny 2: Renegades is its strong resemblance to the world of Star Wars. In addition to the title’s promotional materials reminiscent of iconic Star Wars movie posters, the expansion will feature weaponry inspired by the science-fiction franchise, such as lightsabers that can be thrown and retracted similar to those wielded by Jedi warriors.

In Destiny 2: Renegades, the narrative centers around your Guardian characters delving into a criminal underworld in an attempt to rescue a friend who’s trapped by their past. Reminiscent of Han Solo’s Carbonite confinement in Empire Strikes Back, this friend is found encased in a block of ice. This connection to Star Wars emerged due to a unique collaboration between Bungie and LucasFilm Games.

According to Alison Lührs, the team at LucasFilm was fantastic to work with. They recognized that for this project to succeed, we needed to identify where art and storytelling intersect. The common themes of underdogs standing against something larger than themselves, as well as those elements within that intersection, were particularly helpful in uncovering the stories we wanted to tell jointly.

James Tsai, the design director, discussed the common ground between the sci-fi realms of Destiny and Star Wars. He pointed out intriguing similarities between characters such as Dredgen from Destiny resembling the Sith from Star Wars, and how the latest Cabal faction shares striking similarities with the Galactic Empire.

Tsai pointed out an interesting comparison: “If you compare Star Wars with Destiny, you’ll notice a similarity.” For example, “our Dredgen characters resemble the Sith, while the Barant Imperium mirrors the Empire in many ways, exhibiting a strong hunger for expansion.

Lührs added, “I often refer to the Praxic Order. They serve as our equivalent of the Jedi in this storyline, maintaining an unwavering commitment to order and justice, and viewing our universe as having a clear division between good and evil. We’ll have opportunities to challenge this perspective in ways that align with our narrative, while staying true to the inspiration we draw from.

In terms of gameplay, we’ll have a peek at the kind of disorder players might encounter when participating in the new activities introduced in the expansion. The video further emphasizes how swift these new journeys will be, as creative lead Tom Farnsworth points out that players can quickly embark on missions from the Lawless Frontier Holomap, create chaos, complete tasks, and depart or perish in the attempt.
