Destiny 2’s Call to Arms Event is Nothing But a Frustrating Mess to the Not-so-Hardcore Players

Honestly, I was really hoping Destiny 2’s latest event would be a fun way for us, the dedicated players, to enjoy the game. But it’s turned out to be super frustrating for most of us, which is a real disappointment.

The recently released Call to Arms event is Bungie’s new way for players to quickly increase their power level and get rewarded while doing so.

Unfortunately, the majority of the players were frustrated at how the event actually works.

The current system only allowed dedicated players to earn the rewards, excluding everyone else.

Okay, so basically there’s going to be a Portal competition where we all try to get the highest scores. The better you do, the more rewards you’ll get – they’re tiered, so the top players will get the best stuff!

Even highly committed Destiny 2 players, after reaching the maximum power level of 550, struggle to become one of the very best.

This change completely prevents players with a power level of 500 or lower from earning the rewards. As you can imagine, many players were upset about this.

Previously, getting an A+ was enough to earn the best equipment. But with this new event, you now have to achieve the very highest score just to be in the top 10-1%.

Destiny 2’s Call to Arms Event’s Rewards are Inaccessible for a Lot of Players

Let’s first explain how Call to Arms works so you can understand why the new event is upsetting many players.

Players will progress by earning access to activities like Cutting Edge: Zone Control, Heliostat, Proving Grounds, and Salt Mines. Your score in each activity will be based on its difficulty, your performance, and any active modifiers.

After completing an activity and receiving a score, you’ll be ranked against all Destiny 2 players. Based on your ranking, you’ll earn points that can be used to get gear from Devrim Kay.

Moreover, your rewards once the event ends will be based on your total accumulated points.

Now here’s where the problem lies.

To reach the top 10-1%, you need to achieve the highest possible score. This means completing the most challenging activity – Ultimate difficulty – while also applying every modifier that makes it harder.

Destiny 2 can be a really challenging game these days. To even attempt the hardest difficulty, you need a power level over 500.

What’s even worse is that your score is also tied to your power level.

This effectively prevents players with less than 500 power from achieving top rankings, as they have virtually no opportunity to place well.

To become one of the very best players, you’ll need to reach a power level of 550. Anything below that – between 501 and 549 – will likely be a significant challenge.

The Call to Arms event seems designed primarily for players who have fully upgraded their characters, despite not being clearly advertised as such. It’s strange that Bungie promoted it as a way for players to get caught up, when it actually leaves most players feeling left behind.

Bungie’s Response to the Feedback

After seeing a lot of feedback on social media, Bungie addressed the concerns. The Destiny 2 Team posted on X (formerly Twitter):

We’ve heard your thoughts on the event’s rewards, activities, and how things are working, and we’re making some adjustments based on that feedback. We’ll share more details about these changes soon.

It’s positive that Bungie quickly addressed the new event, but some players are worried it favors those who spend money. Specifically, a paid upgrade offers a 15% score boost, which feels like a ‘pay-to-win’ element.

While it may not seem like much for new players, those who are already at their maximum power level would likely be at the very top of the leaderboard during the event.

The in-game event was designed to get Destiny 2 players excited and playing again before the new Renegades expansion comes out, but it’s actually pushing them away instead.

Currently, Bungie hasn’t announced what changes they’ll be making. Players have been requesting a few things, like removing the impact of power level on scores, and getting rid of the penalty for being below power level 550.

We hope the upcoming changes to Destiny 2 improve the game for everyone, not just the most dedicated players.
