Destiny 3 In Development at Bungie According to New Leak

Since launching in 2017, Destiny 2 has been a major game, much like how Bungie became a leading developer with the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Recently, however, both the game and the company have faced challenges and seen their player base dwindle. Though some fans hope Marathon will revive Bungie’s fortunes, it appears the studio is already planning for the future, with reports suggesting Destiny 3 is currently in development.

A reliable Destiny 2 leaker, Colony Deaks, recently tweeted that development of Destiny 3 has begun. According to the leak, Bungie started working on the sequel a few weeks ago, and plans to reveal more details soon. While it’s very early in the development process, Bungie seems to be preparing to share updates in the coming weeks.

It’s not unexpected that Bungie would create a sequel to one of their biggest hits, especially given the current condition of the game and how players feel about it. However, the announcement is surprising when you consider how far along development was on Marathon and the recent issues surrounding its release.

That’s right, we’re in the very beginning stages of developing Destiny 3. You might have seen a tweet about it earlier today. We’ve known about this for a few weeks, but wanted to hold off on sharing until we had more to talk about, because it’s so early in development and…

Tyson Green, the director of Destiny 2 at Bungie, recently discussed the game with IGN. Although he didn’t officially announce Destiny 3, his comments strongly suggested that it’s in development. He focused on improving the initial player experience – something Destiny 2 has struggled with – and the challenges of maintaining a constantly evolving live-service game.

As a huge Destiny fan, I’m really glad to hear the developers are committed to the future of the game! They’ve said they don’t want it to become stale, and they’re actually listening to us players. What we’ve been saying is that we’re tired of just grinding for power levels – we want meaningful rewards that feel earned and impactful, and it sounds like they’re finally getting that.

Whenever and wherever Destiny 3 ends up, it’s crucial that it avoids the pitfalls of the previous game. It needs to feel like a fresh start, not just more of the same. Players will be expecting a lot, especially considering the current state of Destiny 2 and the upcoming Marathon release in 2026.

It’s common to see once-great game developers struggle to maintain their success. While Bungie is famous for creating Halo, recent issues have tarnished that reputation. BioWare has faced similar challenges with games like Anthem, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. However, a single hit game can quickly rebuild a studio’s fanbase and restore their positive image.
