Well, folks, it’s official: the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival we were all hoping for isn’t happening. Sarah Michelle Gellar herself just broke the news on Instagram, and let me tell you, it’s a real blow to fans like me. Apparently, Hulu has decided to pull the plug on New Sunnydale, and honestly, it’s a pretty painful announcement.
I’m sad to announce that Hulu won’t be moving forward with the ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’ project, but I wanted you to hear it directly from me,” Gellar shared in a video. She expressed gratitude to Chloé Zhao, saying Zhao brought her back to the role and reminded her how much she loves the character – and how much Buffy means to fans. Gellar added that this news doesn’t change that, and jokingly offered to still be contacted if the world ends.
Sarah Michelle Gellar Actually Turned Down The Revival Several Times
Sarah Michelle Gellar recently revealed to ComicBook that she was hesitant about returning for the show’s revival, and actually turned down the offer several times – even after initially saying yes. When asked about her previous statements that she would “never” reprise her role, she explained her initial reluctance.
I genuinely believed that was my final decision and hadn’t considered doing it again. Then Chloé Zhao approached me with compelling reasons and a fresh perspective. I was also in a different headspace, and the world had changed. Even with that, it took four years to finally commit, because I’d often say yes, then quickly change my mind a month later. I kept going back and forth, like Cameron Frye in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – constantly second-guessing myself.
I simply asked for patience, explaining that it took six years to make a sequel to Ready or Not. Doing things well takes time. I initially turned down Chloe’s idea several times, but she eventually convinced me with her passion and a compelling explanation of why now was the right time and why this sequel was important.
This is a developing story…
