The creative mind behind hit games such as “Devil May Cry 5” and the upcoming “Dragon’s Dogma 2,” Hideaki Itsuno, has shared some insights into his plans for his next project. In a chat with VGC, Itsuno expressed that his next game, developed at his newly formed studio after leaving Capcom, won’t follow the path of the “Souls” genre. Instead, the team at Lightspeed Studio aims to develop an action game that offers something fresh and unique compared to what is currently available in the market.
When asked about the market being flooded with games similar to the Souls series, Itsuno replied that he didn’t join LightSpeed Studio to produce an upgraded version of existing games with familiar gameplay, narrative, and character designs. Instead, his goal is to develop an action game offering unique gameplay experiences different from what currently exists. While he acknowledges their impact, he has no intention of replicating the same formula.
Regarding what Itsuno may have learned from Capcom about creating action games, he expressed a desire to move beyond merely producing another game similar to Devil May Cry 5. Instead, he seems more drawn towards projects that challenge the conventional action game format, referencing titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle as examples of this approach.
Following Devil May Cry 5, numerous single-player games emerged in the market. Regardless of their success, I don’t hold strong opinions about games resembling Devil May Cry or Dark Souls. There were several games that blended these two styles, but none stood out exceptionally. Games that lay outside this spectrum, such as the latest Indiana Jones title, left a more significant impression on me.
As a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! Directly from the horse’s mouth, Toshihiro Itsuni, the mastermind behind LightSpeed Studio, has hinted that his upcoming project will bear a striking resemblance to his previous works at Capcom. This is what he alluded to when he spoke about creating a “Japanese-style” action game during GDC earlier this year. I can hardly contain my anticipation!
Itsuno clarified that when he refers to ‘Japanese style,’ he means a type of action game similar to those he created at Capcom, characterized by bold animation, distinctive characters, inventive elements, high skill requirements, and diverse action. He hopes that players who appreciate action games will also enjoy this game.
Back in January, Itsuno disclosed via a social media update that the development of his latest endeavor had commenced. In this post, he expressed the intention of expanding the team with additional developers for this project. He also hinted that further information regarding the project’s title would be shared with everyone once the studio was ready to do so.
