As an ardent fan, I was taken aback when Julie Benz, the actress who played Dexter’s partner in crime (and love), openly expressed her disappointment about not making a comeback in the new series, Dexter: Resurrection. The jaw-dropping twist in Dexter‘s fourth season left an indelible mark on television history. Throughout the first four seasons, Dexter Morgan, the serial killer with a heart, used his girlfriend, Rita, and her children as a mask for his dual life. However, as the series progressed, it became evident that his feelings for this family were genuine, and he indeed grew to care deeply for them. This was especially apparent when he became a father to his own biological child. Yet, in Dexter‘s fourth season, Dexter learned the hard way that he couldn’t have it all, as he struggled to maintain the delicate balance between being a loving husband and a vigilante serial killer.
As I reflect on the gripping finale of Dexter, I can’t help but be struck by the haunting image that lingers: Dexter, stunned, finds Rita lifeless in a tub drenched with blood, his innocent son Harrison, mirroring his own tragic past, witnessing the horrific scene. It’s an ending that carries a chilling poeticism, its ripples echoing ominously throughout the series, particularly in shaping Harrison’s future and casting a persistent shadow over Dexter.
In the premiere of Dexter: Resurrection, I find myself haunted by ghostly apparitions from Dexter’s past – Sgt. Doakes, Miguel Prado, and the Trinity Killer, the man who took Rita from us. These spectral figures are a stark reminder that Dexter’s dark past refuses to stay buried.
Dexter Actress Julie Benz Wants to Return as Rita in Dexter: Resurrection
In the revival of “Dexter: Resurrection”, numerous familiar faces have reappeared from the initial series. Many fans had anticipated Rita’s return, but unfortunately, that isn’t happening at this time. Actress Julie Benz has shared with BingetownTV (through Dexter Daily) that she wasn’t asked to come back for “Dexter: Resurrection”, and she’s saddened by the news. The creators informed her they would be using a clip from an earlier season, possibly referring to the scene where she’s discovered in the bathtub. However, the show employs a different actress to reenact that sequence within Dexter’s dream sequence.
In simpler terms, the actor believes that there was an opportunity for an engaging narrative, but unfortunately, they never pursued it or didn’t have a plan to do so. Admittedly, this situation has left him somewhat disappointed, but since it isn’t his project, as an actor, he can only express his bad fortune with reboots. He wonders if his misfortune lies in his karma or something else, and he finds it unfortunate that they don’t see the potential for storytelling in this situation.
Julie Benz Officially Rules Out Appearing as Rita Morgan in Dexter: Revival #DexterRevival
— BingetownTV Podcast Network (@bingetowntv) July 22, 2025
It appears that Benz might consider rejoining the cast of the upcoming revival of “Dexter: Resurrection.” However, whether this will actually occur is yet to be determined. But if Dexter’s past villains, sister, and father can return, why not his wife? Given Harrison’s significant role in the storyline of “Dexter: Resurrection,” it could be intriguing to see her scolding Dexter for creating a traumatized child or a potential killer.
Instead, the continuation of Dexter: Resurrection allows for Rita’s potential return in future seasons. If Dexter and Harrison find a happy ending, it’s plausible that Dexter might catch a glimpse of Rita’s spirit, smiling back at them. Since Dexter has the ability to see deceased individuals, there are numerous ways to incorporate her into the storyline. Benz had expressed surprise when the conclusion of Dexter Season 4 was sudden and felt it wasn’t fair because she wasn’t given much advance notice. However, over time, she has come to recognize its significance for fans and the development of the larger series.
