The possible cancellation of “Dexter: Original Sin” might suggest troubles for other spin-off series in development, given that the Dexter franchise is a significant cornerstone for Paramount+. Over the past month, I’ve visited Los Angeles twice and observed an overwhelming number of digital advertisements at LAX airport promoting the entire Dexter series on their streaming service – to the point where it seemed they weren’t promoting anything else but Dexter. This long-running series continues to captivate audiences despite being nearly 20 years old and various contentious conclusions. Audiences are drawn to antiheroes, particularly one as alluring and intriguing as Dexter Morgan, which likely explains the enduring appeal.
It seems that the expansion of the Dexter franchise is being scaled back due to a recent merger between Paramount and Skydance. With fresh perspectives on board, they are re-evaluating all aspects of the company and devising new strategies to streamline operations and potentially reduce costs. Regrettably, it appears that the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, which was initially given the go-ahead for Season 2 this year, has been canceled and will not proceed as planned. However, there’s a possibility that other Dexter shows may also be affected and face cancellation.
Dexter’s Trinity Killer Spin-Off May Be Dead Following Original Sin Cancellation
The article from Variety further stated that Matt Thunell, head of Paramount’s TV department, is concentrating on the revival titled “Dexter: Resurrection” and Michael C. Hall’s portrayal of Dexter Morgan for the future of the series. Given that Hall is so deeply linked to the character and holds significant appeal for fans, this approach seems sensible. However, it appears that future versions of the show will center entirely around him. Contrarily, Paramount had earlier announced plans for a Dexter spin-off centered on the Trinity Killer, with John Lithgow set to narrate.
Based on statements by showrunner Clyde Phillips, a spin-off series centered around the Trinity Killer character has been scripted for ten episodes. Phillips expressed approval for this work, but they were waiting for official approval from Paramount. It’s possible that production was paused due to preparations for the merger with Skydance. However, considering Paramount’s current focus on Michael C. Hall’s portrayal of Dexter, it appears unlikely that the Trinity Killer spin-off will proceed as planned.
Furthermore, it was mentioned earlier this year that potential spin-offs for the characters from Dexter: Resurrection were being discussed. There’s been a lot of chatter about creating a series focusing on Krysten Ritter’s Lady Vengeance character, who met her end after just three episodes. Ritter herself has hinted at conversations about her character’s future, which could potentially make sense through a prequel spin-off. Yet, it appears that this idea is still unlikely due to the fact that it would be challenging to incorporate Michael C. Hall’s Dexter into such a show, given that their brief relationship has already been portrayed on screen.
As a diehard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of excitement when hearing whispers that a writers’ room is being set up for Season 2 of “Dexter: Resurrection”. Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, the overwhelming critical acclaim and viewership numbers seem too enticing to ignore. For now, let’s keep our fingers crossed, but I wouldn’t bet on a “Yellowstone”-style transformation of the Dexter universe just yet. The future remains uncertain, and we’ll have to wait and see!
