The director of Dexter: New Blood attempted to steer the show away from a potentially disappointing ending, but Michael C. Hall didn’t agree. It’s challenging to conclude a popular, long-running series in a way that satisfies everyone. The original Dexter finale didn’t quite hit the mark for many viewers. So, almost ten years later, the creators returned with Dexter: New Blood, hoping to deliver a more conclusive and satisfying ending. However, the new finale proved even more controversial, as Dexter Morgan was killed off shortly after being reintroduced to the audience.
Michael C. Hall wasn’t required to reprise his role, but he wanted to give his character, Dexter, a definitive ending – one where he faced consequences for his past actions, including the harm he caused to his son and those around him. Though the ending of Dexter: New Blood was divisive, many fans wished for a way to bring the character back. It seemed unlikely, but it surprisingly happened. However, one person involved in the show initially tried to prevent this from occurring.
Michael C. Hall Rejected Alternate Dexter: New Blood Ending Where He Lived
On the “Dark Passengers: A Dexter Podcast,” director Marcos Siega and showrunner Clyde Phillips shared that Dexter’s final scene was filmed very early in production. They had to shoot it in the snow while it was still there. Despite this, Siega felt Dexter shouldn’t die. He and actor Michael C. Hall lived together during filming of “Dexter: New Blood,” and Siega even suggested they secretly film an alternate ending where Dexter survives.
I recall telling Michael that I thought we should film a different ending. I worried that the current ending wasn’t right, and that because the season was going to be so good, we’d end up regretting the choice. But Michael was firm – he insisted that was the final ending and that the character was definitely going to die.
It’s unknown how much consideration Siega gave to a different ending. Would it have simply focused on Dexter, perhaps showing a subtle sign of life like his eyes opening or a twitch of his hand? Or would the whole final scene have been rewritten, with him disappearing into the woods alone, leaving Harrison behind? It’s difficult to know for sure.
Scott Siega acknowledged that while Dexter’s death was the correct narrative decision and he defended the original ending, he personally wished Dexter had survived. He pointed out that the creative team faced significant criticism for the finale, but playfully noted that Michael C. Hall, the originator of the idea for a continuation, ironically avoided blame. Siega’s hope for an alternate ending ultimately came true when Hall himself proposed Dexter: Resurrection. Now, Dexter is back, and many believe he’s better than ever.
