Dexter prequel Original Sin cancelled in shock move after season 2 was previously announced

It turns out that Dexter: Original Sin won’t be continuing for another season, even though the spin-off series was previously given a green light only four months earlier.

As reported by Variety, Paramount has chosen not to proceed with the drama, without any explanation provided as to why their initial decision has been changed.

The surprise isn’t only due to the previous renewal announcement, but also because the initial season garnered high viewership, making it Showtime’s most-streamed premiere at the time of its debut.

The show premiered from December 2024 to February 2025, with Patrick Gibson portraying a younger version of Michael C Hall’s serial killer character. It delved into his early years, setting the scene in Miami during the early ’90s. Notable actors joining him were Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and James Martinez.

In April, it was announced that the series received an official renewal. The original creator and showrunner, Clyde Phillips, is set to return, and a team of writers is all prepared to start working on fresh episodes.

Phillips hinted at potential elements of a possible sequel, saying to ComicBook.com: “It’s going to turn into the largest Easter egg ever. We need him to develop in various aspects. You’ll need to master the art of blending better. He will need to learn how to kill more effectively and efficiently.

He asked, “What about next season, will he have his boat then? Will he secure an apartment? Will he begin sporting a Henley shirt? Will he engage in the ‘red string’ ritual?

We’re planning on delving into those aspects. For the viewers, it will feel like returning home with the music, Michael C Hall’s voice being an integral part of the show.

From now on, the previous approach won’t hold true anymore. Instead, it seems that the future direction for the franchise is shifting towards the sequel series called “Dexter: Resurrection”. It appears they are about to start working on the second season of this show right away.

At the moment, the initial release of “Resurrection” is underway; it made its premiere in July, and to date, it’s been receiving rave responses from both audiences and critics, boasting an impressive 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
