It appears that Dexter: Resurrection is already sparking discussions among fans about the villain for Season 2. This popular TV show of the year has effectively utilized the weekly release format, which contrasts with many shows today that are released en masse for binge-watching. Instead, Paramount has followed the traditional approach by releasing the Dexter sequel series just as it did in the past. Each week, fans engage in speculation, theory-building, and debate about potential future events of the show, leading to a variety of intriguing (and sometimes outrageous) theories about the series’ direction. Despite the speculative nature, these discussions keep Dexter: Resurrection relevant and prevent it from fading from public conversation too quickly.
Resurrection, the show subtly references a notorious serial killer known as the New York Ripper. This case has been a nagging one for Claudette Wallace, the new detective in Dexter: Resurrection, but she’s yet to crack it open.
Spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection follow below.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 2’s Villain May Be the New York Ripper
In the latest episode of “Dexter: Resurrection,” the New York Ripper case started to take center stage. Previously unbeknownst to Dexter, details about this case were limited to a mere mention in Leon Prater’s collection of serial killer trophies. A visit to a criminal justice college with Harrison provided Dexter with a firsthand look at the New York Ripper’s gruesome work. The Ripper removes his victims’ intestines and then torments their families with ominous phone calls that the police haven’t been able to trace. It’s a chilling portrayal, and without a doubt, one of Dexter’s darkest adversaries… though it’s important to note that the Ripper isn’t technically a villain yet since Dexter hasn’t initiated an investigation against him.
As only three episodes remain in the first season, it appears less probable that Dexter will confront this impending threat. Batista is closing in on Dexter, making it necessary for Pratt and his team to be handled, and Dexter continues to build a bond with Harrison. Introducing a new murderer at the final hour or disclosing that someone from this season has been the antagonist would feel abrupt. Instead, it seems more plausible that the New York Ripper will emerge as the villain in Season 2 and perhaps, we’ll learn their identity before the end of the current season to create anticipation for their potential return.
In an interview with USA Today before the debut of Dexter: Resurrection, showrunner Clyde Phillips hinted that some villains might evade Dexter’s justice and reappear in subsequent seasons, potentially including the New York Ripper. If so, this character promises an enticing plot development, one that wouldn’t be satisfying to merely rush through their conclusion. As Prater possesses a memento from the New York Ripper, not obtained by retrieving it from a police evidence locker since Claudette was unaware of the murder weapon, there’s a chance Dexter may extract more details about the killer from Prater by season’s end.
Who Is the New York Ripper?
It’s quite plausible that the real identity of the New York Ripper could be a brand-new character yet to appear on the scene. Yet, enthusiasts have proposed that almost any character from the series could be responsible for the crimes. Some find it highly unlikely but amusing that it might be Joey Quinn, a character from the original Dexter series. However, the most captivating hypothesis is that the New York Ripper could be Jonah Mitchell, the son of the Trinity Killer.
The most recent encounter with Jonah occurred in Season 6 of Dexter, specifically in an episode called “Nebraska”. In this episode, Dexter discovers that the Trinity Killer has resumed his murderous rampage, this time targeting his own family in Nebraska. Upon investigating, Dexter encounters Jonah, who is now employed at a hardware store and wields a hook during their initial encounter. Jonah asserts that he witnessed his father commit the murders, but Dexter reveals the truth about the Trinity Killer’s ultimate fate. This leads to a heated confrontation where Jonah attempts to attack Dexter with the hook, pleading for death due to his own horrific actions – having killed his mother after pushing his sister to suicide. Although Jonah expresses remorse and desires relief from his torment, Dexter chooses to let him carry the burden of guilt instead.
In the TV series “Dexter: Resurrection”, viewers have speculated that the murder weapon resembling a fishhook could belong to Jonah. This is intriguing because showrunner Clyde Phillips enjoys crafting stories about inherited sins, which could lead to intense conflicts between Dexter and Jonah, given his years of isolation steeped in guilt and dark contemplations. It’s possible that this is merely a misdirect, the story may not offer complete resolution, or it could be part of a larger, drawn-out plot. Given that “Dexter: Resurrection” has three seasons planned, it’s plausible that the writers are subtly setting up future events.
