In 2022, Showrunner of Dexter, Clyde Phillips, announced that “Dexter: New Blood” would serve as the definitive conclusion to Dexter’s prolonged and intricate tale of a serial killer.
In the final episode of the New Blood series, the character portrayed by Michael C Hall, a former serial killer who later became a fishing gear salesman and blood spatter analyst, seemed to take his final breath after being shot by his troubled adolescent son, Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.
Following the events, I shared with Deadline my conviction: “This undoubtedly marks the end of Dexter. The character of Dexter has met his demise.
Three years later, Dexter has remarkably come back to life in Dexter: Resurrection, seemingly unscathed by the lethal shot he took earlier.
But why did the continuation feel necessary for the team?
In essence, a TV isn’t essential, but reviving a series after two decades is extraordinarily rare in our line of work. Yet, here we are, making our dreams come true by having this opportunity.
“The main reason is Michael C Hall, there’s no doubt,” he added. “He is such a fan favourite.
As a captivated movie critic, I find myself pondering an intriguing question each Sunday evening: Why do we, the audience, willingly welcome a notorious serial killer into our living rooms? The answer, my fellow cinephiles, lies in the mesmerizing presence of Michael Hall and his enchanting voiceover.
In a more casual and engaging manner, the sentence could be rephrased as: “His voice-over is both endearing and relatable, often making us laugh, yet also tugging at our heartstrings with its hints of pain and irony. Frankly, I don’t believe anyone can get enough of Michael’s performances, and I certainly can’t.
Scott Reynolds, the co-executive producer, mentioned: “We haven’t told all the stories yet. Dexter is embarking on a fresh phase of life as a father to a young adult, so there’s plenty more to explore.

In no time at all, Dexter swiftly finds himself in more trouble, especially when his old acquaintance, Detective Angel Batista from Miami Metro (played by David Zayas), shows up. This detective has a few legitimate queries regarding his supposedly deceased friend.
However, having moved from Florida to enjoy tranquility in upstate New York, Dexter encounters a fresh realm of possibilities upon his arrival in New York City during Resurrection.
He’s on his way to New York City (the Big Apple) in search of his son Harrison, but instead, he gets caught up with a gang of multiple murderers. Each one has their unique approach and tools for selecting their victims.
“New York is basically a surveillance state, and we have to pay attention to that,” says Phillips.
In New York, among its eight million residents, there are extraordinary individuals who bring wonder, as well as some unsavory characters requiring unique retribution from him.
“Plus New York is vibrant and exciting and surprising.”
The new friends have assembled an impressive ensemble for the series, featuring stars like Kristen Ritter from Jessica Jones, Peter Dinklage known from Game of Thrones, Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, David Dastmalchian, and Eric Stonestreet who was prominent in Modern Family.
Phillips playfully hinted that they are an abundant source of fresh ideas for storytelling, a stimulus for creativity, and a test for Dexter.
However, the details of how he connects with these individuals and how it impacts his quest to reunite with Harrison are still a mystery.
Given that Dexter has caught Angel’s attention too, it remains to be seen whether the character will survive for future battles.
In my opinion as a film critic, Phillips and Reynolds hinted at the potential continuation of this series beyond its upcoming season. They suggested that the storyline has the capacity to endure for an extended period, possibly even multiple years.
“Dexter Resurrection will continue on,” asserted Reynolds. “As will Dexter: Original Sin.”
The revival of Dexter, titled “Dexter: Resurrection,” is set to debut on Paramount+ on July 11th, 2025. Enjoy a week-long complimentary trial of Paramount+ by subscribing through Amazon Prime Video!
