Diane Keaton had her priorities in order.
Four years before Diane Keaton’s passing in California at age 79, she told her friend Carol Kane what was most important to her during that time.
In a 2021 interview with *Interview* magazine, Diane shared how much she cherishes her close friendship with Carol, a relationship she’s relied on for years. She also spoke about her simple joys: walking her dog, being outdoors, and exploring places like California and Arizona. Above all, she expressed deep gratitude for the gift of sight, calling it her favorite thing in life.
During the interview, Diane explained that her ability to envision things helped her navigate life, a skill she credited to her late mother, Dorothy Deanne Keaton.
She believed the purpose of life was simply to experience and appreciate the world around you. ‘Being able to see – that’s what brings me joy,’ she explained. ‘I can see my mother, and that’s the greatest gift of all.’
Diane Keaton, known for her iconic roles in films like *Book Club*, *The Family Stone*, and the Oscar-winning *Annie Hall*, was a celebrated actress. However, despite her impressive career and raising her two adopted sons, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25, she found happiness in simpler things and was content with who she was.
During the same interview, Ariana Grande playfully asked Diane Warren how it felt to be considered “so iconic,” but Warren modestly brushed off the compliment.
“It’s difficult for me to process all of this,” Diane confessed. “I don’t quite see myself the way others do. I’m just a normal person living my life, and I definitely don’t feel like a celebrity. Every day is the same – I wake up and have everyday tasks to handle, like making sure the dog gets fed.”

And when it came to life, Diane felt most fulfilled by her loved ones.
“My friends make my heart sing,” she continued. “My kids make my heart sing.”
Diane cheerfully confessed that a glass of wine always improved her day, and enthusiastically shared, “Lillet Blanc, with plenty of ice, is just wonderful!”
