Diane Morgan is now filming a new BBC comedy series about artificial intelligence.
Originally called ‘Ann Droid,’ the show was created by Morgan and Sarah Kendall, known for their work on ‘Frayed’ and ‘The Other One.’ The story takes place in 2029 and centers on Sue, a woman dealing with the loss of her husband who died a year and a half ago.
Michael is leaving home once more, this time to try and fix his marriage, and he’s given his mother a thoughtful gift: a used Eldercare Robot named Linda (played by Morgan) to help her manage on her own.
Created to provide companionship for seniors and ease the burden on healthcare services, this device is Sue’s biggest fear: an overly eager and socially awkward nuisance.
Sue soon realizes she can use her new robot helper to get things done – everything from dealing with annoyances to finishing tasks her son always puts off. This leads to a heartwarming and funny friendship between the older woman and her technically skilled, but socially awkward, robot companion.
The core idea behind Ann Droid is this: as artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, what aspects of life can it truly take over, and what will always remain uniquely human?
Ann Droid is a heartwarming and humorous story about Sue and Linda, an unexpected pair of friends. Linda is a special robot designed to help seniors stay healthy and provide companionship.
Adding to the excitement, Paul Ready, who appears with Morgan in Motherland, plays Michael, and the beloved Sue Johnston, known from shows like True Love and The Royle Family, stars as Sue.
Ready enthusiastically shared, ‘If you ever have the opportunity to collaborate with Diane Morgan, don’t hesitate – jump at it!’ He’s excited to work with her again and contribute to her fantastic comedy show, bringing his character Michael to life.
Johnston shared his enthusiasm, saying he’s delighted to return to the center of BBC comedy. He praised Diane and Sarah for building a show with broad appeal, offering something for everyone, and expressed his eagerness to begin working on it.
