Diane von Furstenberg on Husband Barry Diller Coming Out as Gay

Diane von Furstenberg has nothing to add about her husband Barry Diller’s sexuality.

Following years of rumors, the fashion designer’s husband publicly came out as gay in his memoir, Who Knew, in March 2025. She has stated that this revelation hasn’t altered their relationship at all, despite their 24 years of marriage.

“I just don’t get it—what’s the big deal?” Diane, who has been with Barry since the late 1970s, told *Variety* in an October 16th interview. “It doesn’t matter, really. Honestly, it’s a silly question,” she added.

The 78-year-old also spoke about her three-year marriage to Prince Egon von Fürstenberg, who revealed he was bisexual after they separated in 1972, though their divorce wasn’t finalized until 1983.

Diane explained, “I’ve married two men who happen to be gay, and honestly, I don’t see their sexual orientation as relevant. To me, they’re just two people I married, and that’s all that matters.”

The creator of the wrap dress doesn’t consider being with Barry as helping him through a difficult time.

You know, I’ve noticed people have a certain perspective on things, but honestly, it’s just different for me. I can’t quite put my finger on it. What I *can* say is, I definitely gave him the push he needed to write that book – I really encouraged him to go for it.

However, Diane insisted that Barry’s Who Knew memoir was not meant to be defined by his coming out.

She clarified that the book wasn’t focused on a specific event, but rather on the author’s life story. She explained that he felt comfortable sharing everything with her right away, and for half a century, she was the only person he truly confided in before he finally wrote the book.

Diane mentioned she hadn’t expected her relationship with Barry to turn romantic at first.

I didn’t realize it right away, but he ended up being my soulmate,” she admitted. “I initially just wanted to be friends – I never expected anything more. But then we became passionate, and he definitely pursued me.”

For Barry’s part, he was just as stunned by his attraction to Diane.

In his memoir, Barry admitted he couldn’t understand how they fell in love. He believed it wasn’t the result of any effort or plan, but rather a natural connection, as if they were meant to be together.

Indeed, Barry felt urges just as strong for Diane as he felt for past male lovers.

When I started dating Diane, I didn’t doubt that my attraction to her was traditionally heterosexual, especially considering my previous attractions had been different. At the time, my first thought was simply, ‘I never expected this!’

She admitted it felt strange because the video only showed a man and a woman kissing.

After the song was released, many people believed it was a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, and I was accused of ‘queerbaiting’ – misleading fans about my sexual orientation. I addressed this on Instagram Live, explaining that I identify as queer and that it’s a part of who I am, something I want to express through my music.
