Diane Warren Reacts to Making Oscars History in an Unexpected Way

Diane Warren is finding humor in her own lore.

Okay, so the Oscars happened, and while my friend – a truly incredible songwriter – didn’t win Best Original Song on March 15th, she completely turned things around. It was her 17th loss in the category, which sounds tough, but she’s reframing it as a huge accomplishment – and honestly, that’s the kind of positive energy we all need! She’s proving that resilience and perspective are just as important as the awards themselves.

I just saw this headline in The Guardian – apparently, Diane Warren now holds the record for the most Oscar nominations without a win, with a whopping 17! She posted on Instagram about it, and honestly, her reaction was perfect – she joked, “At least I’m a record holder of something!!” It’s so relatable and funny, even though I’m really hoping she finally takes home an Oscar one day!

Ultimately, the song “Golden” by KPop Demon Hunters was the winner, beating out Diane’s “Dear Me” from her documentary, Relentless. Other nominated songs included Kesha’s ballad “I Lied to You” from Sinners, “Sweet Dreams of Joy” from Viva Verdi!, and the main song from Train Dreams.

Still feeling optimistic, the singer of “Seaside” shared the award on Facebook that same evening.

She jokingly celebrated maintaining her streak, excitedly announcing she’d set a new personal best. She then playfully hinted at a future return, asking if she’d be welcomed back.

Diane Keaton earned her first Oscar nomination in 1987 for the song “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from the movie Mannequin. Despite many popular songs from her films being nominated for awards by the Recording Academy, she hasn’t won one yet. For example, “How Do I Live” from Con Air lost to “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from Armageddon lost to “When You Believe” from The Prince of Egypt.

Although Diane didn’t receive a competitive Oscar at the ceremony, the Academy honored her in 2022 with a special Oscar recognizing her talent, kindness, and dedication to the role of music in movies.

Despite being nominated for Best Original Song for eight years straight—from 2017 to 2025—she never actually won the award.

Diane celebrated her winning streak, and when she received her award, she jokingly said she’d been waiting a very long time for it.

Oh my gosh, after thirty-four years I finally got to say it – ‘I’d like to thank the Academy!’ It was the most amazing moment. I’ve written so many acceptance speeches in my head, little crumpled-up versions in my pocket, just dreaming of this day. To actually get up there and say it… it was incredible.

The songwriter described her nominations as a major success, despite not always winning. She explained that even being chosen from the many songs featured in films felt like a huge accomplishment each year, rather than a loss.

“That being said,” she added, “it feels good to win, to actually have one of these things.”

Although Diane hasn’t won an Oscar yet, here’s a look at other famous people who have received the award…
